If agent Bus Cook knows his clients as well as he thinks, Dolphins fans can cross Brett Favre off their wish list. But Steve McNair might be another matter. Cook said Thursday he thought McNair would be ''amenable'' to playing for the Dolphins if the Tennessee Titans cut or trade McNair. As for Favre, however, Cook thinks his client is either a Green Bay Packer or is packing it in.

The Chiefs, according to team sources, halted draft-pick compensation negotiations with the Jets for Herman Edwards' services all day yesterday before finally agreeing to re-open them last night, The source said that Jets owner Woody Johnson was so angry Wednesday with the negotiations faltering that he blurted out, "They can just have him."

According to a Jets assistant coach, Herm Edwards met with his staff yesterday and gave what amounted to a goodbye speech, saying, "At the end of the day, I don't know how this is going to turn out." Later, according to a person familiar with the situation, Edwards cleared out his office at Weeb Ewbank Hall.

The Vikings were considered Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress' top choice because they have quite a bit of talent and a good salary-cap situation, and new owner Zygi Wilf is committed to spending money to win. Sources with the Vikings said Childress wants to make Eagles linebackers coach Steve Spagnuolo his defensive coordinator.

Former Vikings coach Bud Grant, who was involved in the interviewing of Brad Childress, said he was impressed with his football knowledge.
-- Minneapolis Star Tribune

With the departure of Brad Childress to the Vikings, the Eagles probably will not name a new offensive coordinator, opting instead to let assistant head coach Marty Mornhinweg handle that role. Mornhinweg was already involved in game-planning and assisting Andy Reid with the play calls.
