Thomas A. Armstrong, 45, of Pittsburgh, died suddenly of a heart attack due to diabetes on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006. Son of David J. and Phyllis Armstrong. Brother of David (Sarah) Armstrong Jr., of France, and Elaine Armstrong, of Pittsburgh. Also survived by nephews Liam and Patrick Armstrong. Tom was a great sports fan and an avid collector of sports memorabilia and autographs. Esther L. (Brougher) Beadling, 94, of Vicksburg, Mich., died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006. She was born June 26, 1911, in Swissvale to the late Alfred and Anna Brougher, married Robert E. Beadling on Sept. 4, 1935, and had 51 wonderful years of marriage until his death on April 14, 1986. Mrs. Beadling was a retired teacher in the Swissvale/Churchill Area School District and a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church, Swissvale. She moved from Forest Hills to Vicksburg in June 2004 to be near her daughter. Surviving are daughters Nancy L. (Robert) Harper, of Vicksburg, and Linda B. (William) Riggs, of Bradenton, Fla.; grandchildren Jeffrey, Douglas and Steven Harper, Gregory Glunt, Leigh Ann Harper Huller, Beth Riggs Hazuka, Terri Riggs Maginnis and Jani Riggs Steinbacher; 14 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Riverview Nursing Home, Three Rivers, Mich., for their loving care. Mary (Benning) Bolkcom, 77, passed into the arms of her Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, in Orlando, Fla. Mary was born Sept. 14, 1928, in Turtle Creek, where she was raised, and was an avid and loyal Steelers fan. A lifetime supporter of the Pittsburgh Opera, she worked many years chairing committees and raising funds and enjoyed playing bridge and was known to be quite competitive. Mary moved to the Orlando area in 2001 and loved her home and many friends there in Solivita. She was a loyal friend known for her elegance, good humor and caring nature and a loving and generous mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. Predeceased by her husband, Wilbur, and stepson, Thomas. Survived by son Charles "Rocky" Westerlund (Katie); stepdaughter Gerry Bolkcom; brothers Norman (Beverly) and Jim (Linda) Benning; sister Norma Andzelik (Bernie); grandchildren Erin Sanders (Nathan), Jonathan Westerlund and Bret and Jess Bolkcom; great-granddaughter Madeleine Sanders, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service celebrating Mary's life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Allegheny Cemetery, 4734 Butler St., Lawrenceville. Samuel Joseph Craighead, 67, of Elizabeth Township, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, in UPMC Presbyterian, Oakland. He was born Feb. 21, 1938, in McKeesport to the late Joseph and Louise McClure Craighead and also was predeceased by stepfather Lawrence Miller. Mr. Craighead was the former executive director of Intermediate Unit I, serving special education needs in Washington, Fayette and Greene counties. He graduated from Elizabeth Forward High School in 1956, earned his B.S. from St. Vincent College and an M. Ed. from Duquesne University and furthered his academic career at the University of Pittsburgh, where he received the Maurice J. Thomas Fellowship in educational administration. Mr. Craighead began his career as an agent with the Prudential Insurance Co. From 1962 to 1965, he taught in the Elizabeth Forward School District and then spent two years as a federal programs coordinator. He then served Fayette, Green and Washington counties as the director of regional educational planning. In 1971, after having been director of cooperative educational development for the Appalachia Educational Laboratory, Charleston, W.Va., for several years, he returned to Western Pennsylvania and began his tenure at Intermediate Unit I. Before being appointed executive director, he was the unit's specialist in federal programs and assistant executive director. Mr. Craighead was a member of the American Association of School Administrators, the American Association of Educational Service Agents, the Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units, the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators, the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, Phi Delta Kappa, the Tri-State Study Council executive committee and the Western Pennsylvania Coalition for Youth Career Development and served on state and national committees developing educational policy. In the community, Mr. Craighead belong to the California and Southeastern Area Schools alliances and St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, Elizabeth Township, and its parish council and was a former member of the Elizabeth Township Municipal Authority. He also was treasurer of the Whipkey Dam Cabin Owners Association for many years. Husband of 45 years of Patricia E. (Hofmeister) Craighead. Father of Joan Kilgore (Charles), of Frederick, Md.; Jennifer Wardropper (Dean) and Scott L. Craighead (Joni), of Elizabeth Township, and Timothy J. Craighead (LuAnn Hoffman), of Mill Run. Pleasant, a son of Eleanor Grace (Sweitzer) Forish, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Greensburg, and the late William Edward Forish. Born April 19, 1918, in Sutersville, he was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Colier) Gaums. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel in Allenport. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre from July 1941 to January 1946. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in West Newton and a graduate of Sewickley High School. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Clara (Miller) Gaums; a son, Gary Gaums, of Ohio; a daughter, Betsy Gaums and her husband, John Goyer, of Colorado; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Steven Paul Gelet, of Waynesboro. Daniel R. Graue, 94, of Greensburg, formerly of Rostraver Township, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, in Redstone Highlands Nursing Home, Greensburg. Born in Kittanning, Aug. 4, 1911, he was the son of the late Emil and Etta Opal Graue. Dan was a 1930 graduate of Ford City High School and a few years after graduation, was elected to the Ford City, Pa., City Council. He was employed for over 25 years by Equibank and its predecessor companies. In his last position with Equibank, he served as manager of the Smithton branch office. Dan was past president of the Smithton Lions Club, a member and chairman of the Rostraver Township Sewage Authority, and served on the board of several non-profit service organizations in Westmoreland County. For many years he was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, of Belle Vernon, where he served as an elder. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia Mabel (Finley) Graue; two daughters and a son-in-law, Margaret Etta and Richard Torrito, of Trumbull, Conn., and Sandra Jean Barber, of Seymour, Conn.; a son, James F. Graue, of New York, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Craig Barber, Kevin Barber, Karen Barber Pacelli and Daniel Torrito; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lavina Campbell, of Stockton, Calif. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Johnson. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in the JAMES C. Myers Hodges and also was predeceased by his first wife, Audrey Jean Britt Hodges, who died April 23, 1967, and his second wife, Aileen Gwen Labush Hodges, who died in September 2004. Mr. Hodges retired after 45 years as a production supervisor for the Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp., Leechburg, and was a member of Library Baptist Church. G. Ernest "Bud" Illmer, 88, of Ligonier, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, in St. Anne Home, Greensburg. He was born Feb. 10, 1917, in Staten Island, N.Y., a son of the late Victor and Elsie Barron Illmer. Bud was raised in Somerset County by his aunt and uncle, Edgar and Lottie Pyle. He was the founder of Ligonier Auto Parts Co. in 1947. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. Bud was past president of the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce and a member and past chairman of the Ligonier Municipal Authority. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Emily Illmer Gelperin; and a daughter, Kirstan J. Burke, in 2002. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret J. "Toddy" Illmer; two daughters, Gretchen J. Jacobs and Kim I. Shaffer and her husband, John, all of Ligonier; grandchildren, Jeffrey Jacobs, of Atlanta, Ga., Jennifer Bevelacqua and husband, Robert, of Woodbridge, Va., Joanna Jacobs, of New York, N.Y., and Lindsay Shaffer, with the U.S. Army stationed in Germany; and two great-grandchildren, Jessica and Giuliana Bevelacqua, of Woodbridge, Va. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, in the chapel of SNYDER FUNERAL HOME INC. & CREMATORY, Bell and East Church streets, Ligonier, with the Rev. William M. John A. Johns
Whitehall

John Abraham Johns, of Whitehall, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005. He was proud to have served in the Army Air Forces in World War II, flying B-25s for the 22nd Bomb Squadron in the China-Burma-India Theater, and was one of the earliest pilots of the P-80, the Air Force's first jet. His lifelong love was art, and he was exceptional in all media, a famed caricaturist, a staff artist for The Pittsburgh Press for 17 years and president emeritus of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. As president of the institute, he led the development of the school's curriculum and expansion nationwide and recently was awarded an honorary doctorate of art for his lifelong achievements. His gift survives him through many of his personal students and those of the institute and will continue to enrich the lives of all who enjoy their art. Beloved teacher, father, brother and friend to many and truly will be missed. Husband of the late Rachel Thomas, whom he missed dearly. Surviving are son John B. Johns, daughter Robin Rosinski, brother Joseph Johns and sister Genevieve Swick. Elsie was very active in her church, from cleaning to working the bingo. Her many pastimes included oil painting, drawing, sewing, decorating, cooking and baking. Mr. Krepps graduated from North Belle Vernon High School and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y., served in the Merchant Marine as an engineering officer and then was on active duty in the Navy aboard the carriers USS Midway and USS Tarawa. He was a supervisor in the maintenance and utilities division of U.S. Steel's Clairton Works before retiring after 26 years of service, a building contractor in North Belle Vernon for many years and past master of the Belle Vernon Masonic lodge. Mrs. Mary Guskiewicz Krowicki, 95, a life long resident of Latrobe, died late Tuesday evening, Jan. 3, 2006, in Excela Health Latrobe Area Hospital following a brief illness. She was born Jan. 14, 1910, in Latrobe, a daughter of the late Andrew and Sophia (Gabrys) Guskiewicz. Mary was a life long and devoted member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Latrobe, and a charter member of the St. John Rosary Altar Christian Mothers. She was also a member of the Polish National Alliance and the First Catholic Slovak Union Branch #199 of Latrobe. She was a former employee of Pearce Woolen Mills, Latrobe, and also a former housemother for student nurses at the former Latrobe Area Hospital School of Nursing. Mary was also known to be an avid Steelers fan and never missed a televised game. Bernadette "Bunny" M. Petros, 54, of Monessen, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, in her home. She was born March 22, 1951, daughter of the late Peter Petros and Kathryn "Tina" Partezana Petros, who survives. Miss Petros was the owner/operator of "Bunny's Beauty Shop" of Monessen for the past 36 years. Miss Petros was due to begin serving as the city controller of the City of Monessen next week. She was a past exulted ruler of Monessen BPOE #773, current member of Monongahela BPOE #455 and currently serving as district state vice president through the Elks. Also, Miss Petros was the president of the ladies auxiliary of the Monessen Eagles. Surviving are two sisters, Sharon Lunt and Russel Wiseman, and Mrs. Joseph (Patti) Rodgers; brother, Michael Petros and Jonny Molek; two nephews, Brian Lunt and Craig Lunt; two great-nephews, Johnathan Feick and Drew Brown; and dear friend, Anthony "Lumpy" Lombardo. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her brother, Peter Petros; nephew, Ronald Lunt; brother-in-law, Art Lunt; and grandparents, Lena and Alex Partezana. John Piser Jr., 89, of Delmont, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006. He was born May 9, 1916, in Salemville, the son of the late Lukas and Annastasia Marczuk, who both died during the influenza epidemic of 1918. After their deaths, he was raised by his adoptive parents, the late John and Eva Piser. John was a retired employee of Conrail. He was a member of St. John Baptist de la Salle Church, in Delmont, and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC Camp). His hobbies included gardening, watching Steelers football and Pirates games, and he enjoyed time alone reading the newspaper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Italie "Tillie" (Borio) Piser; and a sister, Margaret Haschak. Gabriel M. "Gabby" Podlucky, 63, of Waterford, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, surrounded by family in prayer, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Johnstown, the oldest son of Gabriel F. and Helen V. Prokop Podlucky. He was a graduate of Johnstown Catholic High School and attended Cambria Rowe Business College. Gabby was an entrepreneur who owned and operated the Jones Brewing Co. and NAPA Auto Parts stores in Connellsville, Confluence, Normalville, Seward and Johnstown for more than 25 years. He also held interest in other real estate projects and was a brainchild of an alternate fuel ethanol project in Clearfield County. Gabby enjoyed boating and was especially fond of the waters off the coast of southern North Carolina. Gabby was a spectacular athlete in high school and loved sports in general; he passed this passion along to his children through many years of coaching football to the youth of the Ligonier Valley. His great love was that of his grandchildren, and he shared his hobbies and interests such as gardening, billiards, games, camping under the stars and exploring nature with them. He was particularly proud to pass along his leadership qualities and other values to his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, Patrick James and Eric Jon; and his granddaughter, Melissa Morgan. He is survived by his high school sweetheart of 45 years, Sandra "Sandy" Canary Podlucky; three sons, Gregory Joseph and wife, Karla Sue Boyd, of Ligonier, Gabriel Christopher and wife, Danielle Marie Harper, of Seattle, Wash., and Jonathan Edward and wife, Donna Marie DeFloria, of Greensburg, and their children, Gregory Jesse, Jordan Patrick, Jared Daniel, Madison Harper, Samantha Rae, Alex Patrick and Abbey Shae. He is also survived by a brother, Bernard Podlucky and wife (Linda Kemp); sisters, Margaret and husband (William Lichtenfels) and Kathleen and husband (Ronald Slezak); sister-in-law, Patricia Canary Perluke; brother-in-law, Gregory Canary and wife, Agnes; 12 nieces and nephews; and 11 great-nieces and -nephews. Norbert B. "Zez" Zezulewicz, 77, formerly of Ross, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, in Waldorf, Md. He was born Jan 19, 1928, in Pittsburgh to the late Stephen and Selma Zezulewicz and also was predeceased by sons James and Greggory Zezulewicz. Norbert was a World War II Navy veteran and a retired technician for the RCA Co. Beloved husband of Anna (Andrzejewski) Zezulewicz. Loving father of Norbert Zezulewicz and Mary Ann Ferraro. Also survived by four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME, 806 Perry Highway, Ross. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Teresa of Avila Church, followed by interment in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Shaler.

Grace L. Zuzack
Latrobe

Grace L. Zuzack, 89, of Latrobe, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, in Excela Health Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born Sept. 24, 1916, in Latrobe, a daughter of the late William and Hettie (Laughner) Campbell. Prior to retirement, Grace worked in medical records for Latrobe Area Hospital. She was a member of the Latrobe United Methodist Church, the Latrobe Senior Citizens and the Daughters of the American Revolution. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew F. Zuzack, in 1979; five sisters, Gertrude Overly, Bessie, Mary and Elsie Campbell, and Florence Edsall; and two brothers, Raymond and William Campbell. She is survived by four sons, William A. Zuzack and his wife, Christine, of Indiana, Pa., Kenneth P. Zuzack and his wife, Patricia, of Rising Sun, Md., James V. Zuzack and his wife, Judith, of Slippery Rock, Pa., and John S. Zuzack and his wife, Marie, of Boulder, Colo.; a brother, Charles Campbell and his wife, Dorothy, of Latrobe; nine grandchildren, Sara, Katherine, Nathan, Michael, Eric, Emily, Kari, Zachary and Jessica Zuzack; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the HARTMAN-GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 1500 Ligonier St., Latrobe. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with her pastor, the Rev. Aimee W. Twigg, officiating. Interment will follow in Unity Cemetery, Unity Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.

Margaret E. Zuzik
Trafford

Margaret E. Zuzik, 83, of Trafford, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, after an extended stay in Select Specialty Hospital, McKeesport. She was born April 4, 1922, in Trafford to the late Michael and Mary Sorokach Zuzik, lost her parents at a young age and left school to help manage the home and take care of her siblings. By taking on this role as mother of her surviving family, she was respected and loved by friends and family for this great sacrifice. Margaret was a member of St. Regis Church, Trafford, and its Altar Rosary Society. Also predeceased by brothers John and George Zuzik and sister Helen Kudrick. Survived by sister Agnes Zuzik and brothers Albert "Bucky" and Michael Zuzik, of Trafford, and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the JOHN M. DOBRINICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 602 Seventh St. (Route 130), Trafford, 412-372-3111. Parting prayers will be at 9 a.m. Friday in the funeral home, followed by Funeral Mass at 9:30 in St. Regis Church with the Rev. James D. Tringhese as celebrant. Interment will follow in New St. Joseph Cemetery, North Versailles.
