Nickelodeon's "Let's Just Play" initiative is proud to join with the American Heart Association, the W.J. Clinton Foundation, and Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee in a decade-long, nationwide campaign designed to stop the increasing prevalence of childhood obesity in the United States. This new initiative is dedicated to inspiring all young Americans to develop life-long healthy habits and to help create the healthiest generation of kids.
About 16 percent of our nation's children and adolescents are overweight or obese--four times more than two decades ago. If this trend continues, our nation's physical and fiscal health will be in danger.
Childhood obesity is leading to a broad range of health problems that previously weren't seen until adulthood, including high blood pressure, type II diabetes, and elevated blood cholesterol levels.
In addition to the physical toll, obese children often suffer from low self-esteem, negative body image, and depression.
If we want today's children to become tomorrow's parents and leaders, we must act now to reduce the growing prevalence of heart disease and stroke by teaching them healthy habits now.
