James R. Adair, 85, of Virginia Manor, Mt. Lebanon, died peacefully on Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, surrounded by his seven children and his grandchildren. Loving husband of 60 years to Rita K. (Echtler) Adair. Beloved father of seven children, Thomas W. Adair (Linda), of Camp Hill, Donald R. Adair (Carolee), of Mt. Lebanon, James Robin Adair (Carol), of Harrisburg, Rita Bawn Adair Hauck (Ronald), of Wexford, Maureen K. Adair, of Mt. Lebanon, Pattie Sue Adair Morgan (Daniel), of Mt. Lebanon, and Brian J. Adair (Julie), of Mt. Lebanon; cherished Pap-Pap to 15, Amy Adair Demmler, Thomas Adair, John Adair, Christine Adair Williams, Lisa Adair, Allison Adair, Ashlie Adair Hauck Burkert, Lindsay Adair Hauck, Colin Adair Morgan, James Spencer Hauck, Connor Joseph Adair, Kathryn Adair and Maureen's children, Katie, Shawn and Colleen; great-grandfather to Beau Demmler, Mia Demmler, Halle Adair, Maggie Adair, Samantha Adair, Nicklaus Williams and Brooke Adair Burkert; brother of Clair Adair and Bonnie Maguire, both of Sheridan, and the late Robert Adair, Grace Adair, Edith Boggs and Thomas Adair. Son of the late Thomas and Martha (Finlay) Adair. Always dedicated to educational discipline, Mr. Adair achieved a perfect attendance record from 1st through 12th grade. A celebrated student of engineering at Carnegie Tech, he was awarded a degree in management before becoming a licensed professional engineer. Starting his engineering career as a rolling mill designer for Lewis Foundry, he was a retired vice president of engineering and a member of the board of directors for United Engineering and Foundry Co. Inc.; senior rolling mill Consultant for U.S. Steel Engineering and Consultants; and founder and president of Rolling Mills Engineers and Consultants Inc. Jim Adair was an internationally renowned designer of rolling mills throughout the world, as well as a recognized author of published articles, a holder of patents on rolling mills, and a lifelong member of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers. J.R. was the architect and builder of his dream home, Dun Adair, the family lodge in Conneaut Lake. A long-standing member of the Duquesne Club, the P.A.A., and the Iroquois Boat Club, Mr. Adair, the proud son of Irish immigrants, also was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and of St. Bernard Church. In his spare time, he was an avid hunter and fly fisherman. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at BEINHAUERS, 2630 W. Liberty Ave., Dormont. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Friday in St. Bernard Church. Eva M. Albensi
Latrobe

Eva M. Albensi, 96, of Latrobe, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, in Ligonier Gardens. She was born Aug. 1, 1909, in Wilpen, a daughter of the late Antonio and Anna Palombini Albensi. She was a member of Holy Family Church, Latrobe, and had been a former manager at the Lloyd Avenue Valley Dairy. She also had worked in sales for the Montgomery Ward Catalog office. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Bernadine Albensi, Catherine Tiberi, Elvira Berardi and Helen L. Albensi; and two brothers, Elmer and Amerigo Albensi. She is survived by two nieces, Virginia Florovito and Pauline Tiberi, both of Latrobe; five nephews, Anthony Tiberi, of Ligonier, Elmer Albensi, of Turtle Creek, Donald Albensi, of Murrysville, Clarence Albensi, of Turtle Creek, and Alexander Widich, of Wilpen; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Lewis B. Barthels
Smithton

Lewis B. "Bud" Barthels, 80, of Smithton, passed away at 7:35 a.m., Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, at UPMC Presbyterian, Oakland. Bud was born June 28, 1925, in Smithton, a son of the late Louis L. and Orpah Gail (Hepler) Barthels. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force Reserve. After serving his country, he attended W&J; College and went on to graduate from Gettysburg College with the Class of 1950. Bud graduated from Eckels School of Mortuary Science in 1951, and became a licensed funeral director in 1954. He worked for the Jones Brewing Company for 31 years and was the owner and supervisor of the L.L. Barthels Funeral Home Inc., in Smithton. A staunch ally of his community, Bud was the founder and past president of the Smithton Area and South Huntingdon Township Ambulance Service and served on the Smithton Municipal Water Authority for 31 years. He was also on the planning committee for the new sewage plant. Bud also served as treasurer for the Olive Branch Cemetery Board and was a member of the Hoffman Cemetery Board of Directors. Additionally, he was a 50-year member of the Gumment Lodge #252 of Fayette City, the Uniontown Lodge of Perfection 14 Degree, and Coudersport Consistory. Bud was a charter member of the Lt. Wayne S. Forsythe Post #790 of Smithton, which he had served as first chaplain and service officer, and was a member of the Hope Memorial Lutheran Church and past member of the church council. Bud received Smithton's Citizen of the Year in 2003, was a member of the American Chestnut Society, and a member of the Clan Forsythe Society of USA. Bud is survived by his loving wife, Elsie Mae Forsythe Barthels, whom he married Oct. 23, 1954; his children, Lewis B. "Blair" Barthels II and wife, Valerie, of West Newton, Nancy D. Poland and husband, Jeff, of Smithton, Christopher Alan Barthels and wife, Kristy, of Elizabeth Township, and Daniel K. Barthels, of Smithton; his grandchildren, Frank E. Urick Jr., Lacee M. Barthels, Jenna S. Urick, Kari A. Barthels, Levi A. Barthels, Kady N. Barthels, and Ashley and Jonathan Wojcik; his brother, Jack B. Barthels and wife, Jane, of Avon Lake, Ohio; his sisters, Marilyn G. Mitchell and husband, R. Brady, of Dunbar, and Alma G. Thrush and husband, James, of Fallston, Md.; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the L.L. BARTHELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Second Street, Smithton. Additional viewing will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in Hope Memorial Lutheran Church, Second and Peer streets, Smithton, where services will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Robert G. Pittavino and the Rev. Herbert Peterson co-officiating. Interment will follow in Barren Run Cemetery, South Huntingdon Township. Frederick D. Bernas
Greensburg

Frederick D. Bernas, 60, of Greensburg, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer, from Excela Health Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. Born Feb. 18, 1945, in Latrobe, he was a son of Frederick T. Bernas, of Latrobe, and the late Virginia A. (Callender) Bernas. He was a member of the Fairmont Church Christian Life Center, Stahlstown. He served in the U.S. National Guard. He retired from the City of Greensburg and had also worked for Point Security at the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport. He was a member of the Police Rod & Gun Club, New Alexandria. He was a loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Ellen K. (Klosky) Bernas, of Greensburg; a son, Bryan D. Bernas, of Greensburg; a daughter, Christine R. Tinkey, of Yukon; four grandchildren, Virginia Tinkey, Chelsey Tinkey, Rachael Tinkey and Shayenne Bernas; a brother, Geary K. Bernas and wife, Debbie, of Conneaut, Ohio; two sisters, Lorraine M. Hood and husband, Ross, of Derry, and Haidee D. Bernas, of Latrobe; a number of nieces and nephews; and his faithful friend, Lucy. Concetta E. Bonaroti, 79, of Verona, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2005. Loving wife of Peter for 60 years; mother of Thomas (Kathie) Bonaroti, of Oakmont, Don (Linda) Bonaroti, of Plum, Pete (Melanie) Bonaroti, of Verona, Monica Bonaroti, of Oakmont, Donna (Hank) Riley, of Lower Burrell, and Robert (Maryann) Bonaroti, of Verona; she is survived by one brother, Charles Cosnotti; and one sister, Phyllis Gentile. She was preceded in death by many other brothers and sisters; also survived by eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Verona Moose, Verona Eagles and the Oakmont American Legion. She enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her family. John D. "J.D" Bonnett, 91, of West Mifflin, formerly of Clairton, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Jefferson Hills. He was born Feb. 23, 1914, in Monessen, a son of the late William M. and Agnes Stevenson Bonnett. He was employed as a Polymerizer operator for the former Hercules, PICCO, (now Eastman Chemical Inc.), Clairton, retiring after 28 years. He was formerly employed, for more than 15 years, with the State Liquor Control Board. He was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish, Clairton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie (Maley) Bonnett, who died Jan. 19, 1987. He is survived by daughters, Sandra Pittman, of Orange, Va., and Kathleen Eichler, of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; a son, John D. Bonnett II, of Forward; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. There will be no visitation. A private blessing will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the A.J. Bruce K. Brown Jr.

Bruce Keith Brown Jr., 79, died peacefully but unexpectedly on Friday, Dec. 23, 2005. Born in Terre Haute, Ind., Bruce was the son of the late Antoinette Turner and Bruce Keith Brown Sr. He was a notable attorney and oilman who served in Washington during wartime as deputy administrator for the U.S. Petroleum Administration for Defense. Bruce Jr. was a World War II Navy veteran, who served as an electronic technician's mate third class while stationed in Attu, Alaska. After attending Northwestern University, where he met his late wife of 53 years, Margaret Hines Brown, Bruce graduated from Marquette University in 1950 with a degree in electrical engineering. He later attained a certificate from the University of Pittsburgh's Business and Management Program. Following a lifetime business career with Westinghouse, in retirement Bruce followed in his father's footsteps as an independent petroleum producer. He also became an income tax preparer. A longtime resident of Monroeville and recently of Murrysville, Bruce is survived by his daughters, Susan Gill Brown Schmidler and Judith Lyn Brown Breece; his only cousin, Dotty Royston, of Tennessee; and by the family of his late sister, Janet Brown Edeleanu. He also is survived by his beloved golden retriever, Becky. Memorial service and interment will be private. Eric J. Buzzeo, "A Gentle Giant," 42, died suddenly with his loving family at his side on Monday, Dec. 26, 2005. Violet R. Crain, 91, of Valencia, formerly of Mars, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, at Fosnight Personal Care Home, Richland. Born in Leesburg, on May 16, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Hiram Blanche Weaver Hedglin. She was a retired beautician and had owned a beauty shop in Grove City. She had lived in California for many years, before returning to Mars in 1994. She was an avid bingo player and golfer. Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Seitz, of Middlesex, and Joanne Price, of Texas; also seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward H. Craft, and her second husband, Guy Crain, and seven brothers and sisters. Joseph Edward Dannhardt, 30, of Greensburg, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, surrounded by his family after battling a brain tumor. He was born March 25, 1975, in Greensburg, a beloved son of Francis and Estelle Dannhardt, of Greensburg. He formerly had been employed by O.C. Cluss Lumber, Greensburg, and previously for Professional Remerchandising. He was a graduate of Greensburg Central Catholic High School, 1994. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving son, Garrett, a sixth-grade student at Aquinas Academy; five siblings, Mary Beth Dannhardt (Russell Fetter), of Greensburg, Patty Goodwin (Chuck), of Churchville, Margaret Tobin (Robert), of Havertown, John Dannhardt, of Cranberry Township, and Theresa Skoloda (Joe), of Latrobe; a niece, Madison Goodwin; and twin nephews, Ryan and Luke Tobin. Lillian I. Elder, 80, of Houston, Pa., died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, in the Donnell House, Washington, Pa. She was born Jan. 22, 1925, in Gayly Pa., a daughter of Ewing and Lucy Bracker Verner. Mrs. Elder had worked as a secretary for Traveler's Insurance in Pittsburgh, then as an office manager for W.T. Grants store in Canonsburg, and retired from the Mountford Drug Store in Houston, where she had worked as a clerk. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Houston. Her hobbies included playing cards and puzzle books and she enjoyed following her grandchildren's activities. On July 21, 1956, in Pittsburgh, she married Boyd Elder who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Gerri Chaney, of Washington, Karen Talerico (John), of Bridgeville, and Sheryl Lammay (George), of Scenery Hill; nine grandchildren, Tracey Tabron, Amy Conner, Deanna Ramsey, Michael, Mark and Tara Talerico and Matthew, Nicholas and Beth Lammay; and five great-grandchildren, Chelsea Hardy, Mikie and Dalton Tabron and Alexis and Austin Franklin. Deceased are a daughter, Sandra Lee Elder; an infant son, Mark Allen Elder; and two brothers, Norman and Dalton Verner. Mary (Kahan) Kerestes, 95, of Greensburg, passed away Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005, in Monsour Medical Center, Jeannette. She was born Oct. 23, 1910, in Monessen, a daughter of the late John and Eve (Michowich) Kahan. When she was 6 months old, Mary and her family moved to Austria, where she lived until she was 18 years old. Mary had a passion for farming and the outdoors, having worked in the fields and with the farm animals for many years. She was the owner of Kerestes Farm Dairy, Belle Vernon. Mary was Catholic by faith, and was a member of St. John Baptist de la Salle Catholic Church, Delmont. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John Kerestes; a son, John R. Kerestes Jr.; and her twin brother, Michael Kahan. Mary is survived by her two devoted daughters, Agnes Moran, of Indiana, and Marcella (Ron) Ray, of Greensburg, with whom Mary lived all of her life, having moved in with the Rays after their marriage. Mary helped them raise and care for their children and home. Also surviving are two brothers, Harry Kahan, of Brazil, and Andy Kahan, of the Ukraine; a sister, Tillie Balych; a niece, Maria Holod; and their families. Amelia H. "Babe" McConaghy, 82, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of West View, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 27, 2005, at Riverside Hospital, Columbus. Born in Pittsburgh on Sept. 10, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Amelia Moll Hollenberger. She was a retired registered nurse for Dixmont State Hospital. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church in Columbus, and was a former member of St. Athanasius Roman Catholic Church, West View. She was a member of the West View VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Riverview AARP, Westerville Senior Citizens, the Blendon Woods Senior Citizens and the West Penn Alumni Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex McConaghy, who died in 1980; and by two brothers, Samuel and Robert Hollenberger; and two sisters, Doris Kern and Viola Hudak. Surviving are a son, Mark McConaghy, of Indianapolis, Ind.; a daughter, Joyce McConaghy, of Columbus; a sister, Mrs. Ralph (Esther) Jones, of Mars; two brothers, James Hollenberger, in Florida, and John Hollenberger, of Youngstown, Ohio; also three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. John F. McKeeta, 90, of Elizabeth Township, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, in Mercy Hospital, Buffalo, N.Y. He was born March 14, 1915, in McKeesport and was the son of the late John W. and Katherine Faix McKeeta and was the husband of Florence Parnham McKeeta, who died April 22, 2005. He was a member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, Elizabeth Township, and was co-owner of the former McKeeta Welding on Market Street, McKeesport, with his brother Regis. John was a lifetime member of the McKeesport Sportsman's Association where he received many marksmanship awards. He was a gun collector and an avid hunter. He is survived by daughters, Janice Rainforth, of Hamburg, N.Y., and Kathie Diskin, of Columbia, Md.; brother, Regis McKeeta, of Elizabeth Township; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a nephew. He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Nigel Rainforth; and sisters, Frances Sarinsky and Virginia Mowrey. A member of St. Mary Czestochowa Parish in McKeesport, she was past president of the St. Mary Czestochowa Christian Mothers and Rosary Society, treasurer of the Ladies of Charity, a member of the finance council, a past president of the former McKeesport Central Catholic School Board and past treasurer of the PTG of the school and also served as a Eucharistic minister for the church. Ms. Mika was president of the McKeesport-White Oak Kiwanis and a member of the Downtown McKeesport Association, the education committee of the Weed and Seed Program, and was on the board of trustees with Carnegie Library in McKeesport. She is survived by a niece, Maran Lee Geletko, of McKeesport; and cousins, Gayle (Dan) Kurpick, Sandra (Chris) Deutsch, Cheryl (Tom) Kirsch, Gary (Paulette) Klun, Irene Balint and Joannie (John) Lawton. Mildred Yanyo Palo, of West Mifflin, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005. An accomplished seamstress, Millie made much of her daughters' clothes while hey were in grade school. She also was highly skilled in cultivating roses in her gardens, which was a source of great joy to her husband, Joe. During the last seven months she lived at Broadmore Assisted Living in Bridgeville, where she experienced much happiness and well-being through the loving, professional care of the staff, and through the many activities in which she participated. As recently as early December she was in rehearsal with the residents' choir preparing for a Christmas carol performance during the holidays. Although her happiness and laughter may be missed, the joyful memory of Millie at Broadmore and in her entire life will be forever kept in the hearts of all who loved her. John F. Shirey Jr., 86, of Ligonier, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at his home. Born May 23, 1919, in Unity Township, he was the son of John F. Shirey and Ruth L. (Berkey) Shirey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Ina Nichols, Martha Belle Shirey and Naomi Shirey; and two brothers, Donavan Shirey and Calvin Shirey. A World War II veteran, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as master sergeant, chief clerk, in Trinidad. After continued service in Newark, N.J., he was honorably discharged in June 1945. He was a retiree from Kennametal Inc. with 32 years of service. He was a member of UAW Local 1059, in which he served as secretary from 1962 to 1995. He was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ligonier. He was a member of American Legion Post 515 in Latrobe. He served as a board member of the Democrat Club of Westmoreland County and was a charter member and treasurer of the Democrat Club of Eastern Westmoreland County. He remained active in the UAW, USWA and Democratic Party until his death. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rosella L. (Janik) Shirey; a daughter, Janet L. Thomas, of Pikeville, N.C.; and three sons, John J. Shirey, of Ligonier, David K. Shirey, of Latrobe, and J. Robert Shirey, of Plymouth Meeting, Pa. He was the proud grandparent of 11 and great-grandparent of five. He is also survived by a sister, Tina Gleckl, of El Cajon, Calif. At John's request, there will be a memorial service held at 3 p.m. Friday at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Ligonier, with the Rev. Paul Poerschke officiating. Family will receive friends and associates following the service in the church. There will be no public visitations. George Edward Smith, 49, of Blairsville, formerly of Morgantown, W.Va., died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005, at his home, after a courageous battle with multiple sclerosis. He was born June 24, 1956, in Morgantown, the son of the late Edward B. and Madeline Zeh Smith. George was a 1974 graduate of Morgantown High School and a 1978 graduate of West Virginia University Business School. Prior to failing health, George was employed by Washington Inventory Service, in Monroeville, as a retail inventory specialist. George was an avid sports fan who loved baseball, WVU football and basketball. George was an animal lover and a big supporter of the ASPCA. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Sarah L. LoRusso-Smith; an uncle, George Zeh and his wife, Elaine, of Byram, Conn.; an aunt, Marjorie Day, of Glen Burnie, Md.; several cousins; and numerous nieces and nephews. Martha L. (Bracken) Weaver Springer, 94, of North Huntingdon, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, in Baldock Health Care Centre, North Huntingdon. Born Nov. 21, 1911, in Greensburg, she was a daughter of the late John Ralph and Mary Maude (Williams) Bracken. Prior to retirement, she was employed as a secretary by Western Pennsylvania United Methodist Church Conference. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Irwin, O.E.S. Chapter 70 of Irwin, Westmoreland White Shrine 18, was former president of United Methodist Women and a member of the Happy Methodists. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles J. Weaver; her second husband, Arthur E. Springer; two brothers, John and George Bracken; and an infant sister. She is survived by a stepdaughter, Jenny Mae Ressler, of Irwin; three stepgrandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the VINCENT V. Anton Steven, 81, of Export, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, in Beverly Healthcare, Murrysville. He was born April 15, 1924, in Koln, Germany, a son of the late Martin and Mary Nowak Steven. Prior to retirement, he was an internal auditor with Allegheny Power. He was a member of Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church, Murrysville, East Suburban Artist League, and member and past president of the Institute of Internal Auditors. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, and received the Purple Heart and Silver Star. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Farrell Steven; and two daughters, Susan Stokes and Mary Spangler. He is survived by two sons, John F. and William M. Steven; a daughter, Nancy Ann Hall; a sister, Mary Myman; also eight grandchildren. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the HART FUNERAL HOME INC., Murrysville. Marjorie F. (Bassler) Wagner, 83, of Lincoln Place, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at her residence. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gustav and Edna Pearl Bassler. In addition to his parents, Johnny is survived by his wife, Joy (Campbell) Warrington, of Youngwood; three sons, Dray Campbell, of Youngwood, Dylan Warrington, of Youngwood, and Jacob Ruman, of Niles, Ohio; five brothers and sisters, Brian (Jennifer) Warrington, of Smithton, Anita (Anthony) Cupo, of Sarasota, Fla., Shana Mounsey, of Irwin, Cassie Warrington and Andrew Warrington, both of Youngstown, Ohio; stepfather, John (Debbie) Mounsey, of Girard, Ohio; stepmother, Bonnie Warrington, of Youngstown, Ohio; six uncles; four aunts; five nieces; three nephews; and 24 cousins. Johnny was preceded in death by two aunts and two cousins. He was employed as a driver by Waste Management, North Huntingdon. Johnny's hobbies included working on cars and spending time with his dogs. She also worked at Three Rivers Administrative Services, was a "1960 DRA Graduates Monthly Dinner" organizer and loved to travel. She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Walter Waterman, of North Versailles; four children, Debra Lotz (Paul Scalla), of Hollister, Calif., Kenneth Lotz (Kelly), of Smithton, Daniel Waterman, of Dallas, Texas, and Robert Waterman (Deborah), of Dallas, Texas; 17 grandchildren; and two brothers, Frank Conley (PeeJay), of the Philippines, and Dennis Conley, of Hollister, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Wilcox, who died in 1986; and by her sister, Twyla Rittman, with whom she made her home in Mars.
