Fellows Honor Legal Trailblazer Harriet E. Miers by Barbara Bratton The Dallas Bar Foundation will recognize longtime Dallas attorney Harriet E. Miers for her legal and civic achievements at the Fellows Reception and Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. April 18 at the Belo Mansion. Texas Supreme Court Justice Nathan L. Hecht will present the Fellows Award to Miers. George Bowles, Fellows Chair, will announce a matching gift from Locke Liddell & Sapp L.L.P. at the luncheon. Miers has been referred to as a Dallas legal trailblazer and a woman with many firsts in her distinguished career. She was the first woman president of the Dallas Bar Association, the first woman president of the State Bar of Texas, the first woman hired by Locke, Purnell, Boren, Laney & Neeley and the first woman to be made managing partner of Locke Purnell Rain Harrell. A legal legend already, she has now taken her talents to Washington, D.C. to serve as President George W. Bush’s Assistant and Staff Secretary. Prior to her appointment by President Bush, Miers was co-managing partner of Locke Liddell & Sapp L.L.P. A commercial litigator, she has practiced for over 30 years. Her previous positions also include serving as Chair of the Texas Lottery Commission, as the personal attorney to President Bush as he transitioned into Governor of Texas, and as a member of the Dallas City Council. Miers was recognized by the National Law Journal as one of 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America and one of the 50 Most Influential Women Lawyers in America. Her list of awards and recognition also include 1997 Woman of the Year, Today’s Dallas Woman; Women of Excellence Award, Women’s Enterprise Magazine; Louise B. Raggio Award, Dallas Women Lawyers Association; Jurisprudence Award, Anti-Defamation League; Hon. Merrill Hartman Award, Legal Services of North Texas; Sarah T. Hughes Award, Women in the Law Section, State Bar of Texas; American Jewish Committee Human Relations Award; and DBA’s Justinian Award for Community Service. It is no surprise that Miers has chosen the Women’s Leadership Council of the United Way to be the beneficiary of the $20,000 grant awarded in her honor by the Fellows. Before her appointment by President Bush, Miers chaired this new women’s initiative for the United Way. “The Women’s Leadership Council seeks to honor the contributions of women to United Way and involves women in making a positive impact on our community as a whole, primarily for women and girls,” Miers said. Lisa Luddy, Strategic Markets Manager for United Way, said, “Harriet Miers was dedicated to helping us launch this new initiative prior to her move to Washington.” A native Texan and Dallasite, Miers received her B.S. degree from Southern Methodist University and her J.D from Southern Methodist University School of Law. After graduating from law school Ms. Miers clerked for Judge Joe E. Estes, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas. She has taught Trial Advocacy at SMU Law School and is licensed to practice in Texas and the District of Columbia. Reservations for the Fellows Luncheon can be reserved by calling Barbara Bratton at 214/220-7487. Barbara Bratton is the Executive Director for the Dallas Bar Foundation.
