Articles for Deletion (AfD) (formerly Votes for deletion) is where Wikipedians decide whether problematic articles should be deleted or kept. Items sent here usually wait five days or so while debate takes place on whether the article should be deleted or not; then the deletion process can proceed based on Wikipedia community consensus. The page is then:

Things to consider

It is important to read and understand the Wikipedia deletion policy, which explains valid grounds for deletion, before adding comments to this page. Click "what links here", in the sidebar of the article page, to see how the page is being used and referenced within Wikipedia.

If a page can serve as a useful redirect or be merged somewhere, do not list it here. Doing so only clutters AfD.

AfD etiquette

  • Please be familiar with the policies of not biting the newcomers, Wikiquette, no personal attacks, and civility before making a recommendation as to whether the article should be deleted or not, or making a comment.
  • Sign any recommendation or comment you add, by adding this at the end: ~~~~.
  • If you are the primary author or otherwise have a vested interest in the article, say so openly, and clearly base your recommendations on the deletion policy.
  • Your opinion will be given the most weight if you are logged in with an account that already existed when the nomination was made. Unregistered and new users are welcome to contribute to the discussion, but their recommendations may be discounted, especially if they seem to be made in bad faith (for example, if they misrepresent their reasons).
  • Please make your recommendation only once. If there is evidence that someone is using sock puppets (multiple accounts belonging to the same person) to make multiple recommendations, such additional recommendations will be discounted.
  • Please familiarize yourself with the frequently cited guidelines WP:BIO, WP:MUSIC, WP:FICT and WP:VAIN.

You don't have to make a recommendation on every nomination; consider not participating if:

  • a nomination involves a topic with which you are unfamiliar.
  • you agree with what has already been formed.

Also, please see this discussion on the talk page of Wikipedia:Deletion Policy regarding notability.

How to list pages for deletion

First, be certain that deleting the page is what you want to recommend. If you can improve the article instead, do so. Consider if it might be better to redirect the article, rename it, merge it into another existing article, or mark it for cleanup; you can do those boldly without listing the page here.

Also, the only pages that should be listed here are articles and their associated talk pages. Go to the appropriate pages to nominate templates, categories, redirects, stub types, pages in the Wikipedia namespace, user pages, or images and other media, or to report a copyright violation.

Finally, before using this process, consider whether the article is a candidate for speedy deletion. If it is, then that method should be used because it is more appropriate and it involves less work all round. See Wikipedia:Speedy_deletions.

To list an article for deletion, follow this three-step process: (replace PageName with the name of the page to be deleted)

I.
Edit PageName.

  Enter the following text at the top of the page you are listing for deletion:

{{subst:afd1}}

Be sure to include "subst:", not just {{afd1}}; this is easier on the servers. Please include "AfD" or similar in the edit summary and please don't mark the edit as minor. Consider checking the "Watch this page" box to follow the page in your watchlist. This allows you to notice if your AfD tag is removed by a vandal. Save the page. (If the article has been nominated for deletion before, use {{afdx}} instead of {{afd1}}. See Template Talk:afdx.)

II.
Create its AfD subpage.

  You should see a prominent link to "this article's entry" in the new AfD text.
Follow that link (to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName) and enter this text:

{{subst:afd2 | pg=PageName | text=Reason why the page should be deleted}} ~~~~

Put the page's name in place of "PageName" and include a reason after text=. (You may well want to include a boldfaced recommendation as part of your reason. This will avoid ambiguity.) Check the "Watch this page" box if you would like to follow the voting process in your watchlist. Save the page.

III.
Add a line to AfD.

  Follow   this edit link   and add a line to the bottom of the page:

{{subst:afd3 | pg=PageName}}

Put the page's name in place of "PageName" and include the page's name in your edit summary. Save the page.

Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts may have some scripts to streamline these steps.

Once listed, articles for deletion can be sorted into relevant categories organised by Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting. This can better target appropriate Wikipedians for expert review.
