Opera6.ini Settings Explained

This document contains information about Opera's configuration options.

Opera6.ini is an initialization file for Opera, essentially a settings file that specifies most of the user preferences. When you alter your preferences within the Opera user interface, this file is automatically modified and saved.

However, Opera6.ini also contains settings that are not available from within the graphical user interface, and the file may be edited manually.

This document was last updated for Opera 8.01.

Note: The version number in the file name does not correspond to the version numbers of Opera releases. It denotes the version number of the settings file itself.

Locations

As a default, opera6.ini will be placed in the user directory (~/.opera on Linux, /profile or a sub-directory of /user settings on Windows). For information on how to used system fixed settings files, please refer to the System Administrator's Handbook.

The easiest way to see where opera6.ini and other Opera files are located on your computer, is to go to Help > About Opera.

Editing

The .ini-file can be opened with any text editor. You are advised not to make changes to the opera6.ini in use while Opera is running. We also recommend that the customized version of opera6.ini be stored in the Opera directory, which is the first place Opera will look for a settings file. This is particularly important to note if you want to run several versions of Opera with different settings, or you have multiple sets of different settings for the same version.

Advice before editing

  • If there is a graphical user interface option for changing the setting you want, we recommend using that over editing opera6.ini.
  • Make a backup of your original opera6.ini before editing.
  • Be careful. Do not change a setting if you are not familiar with what it does.
  • If you end up having to delete your settings file, a new one will be generated when you start Opera, but all previous settings will then be gone.

Syntax and values

For integer fields:

  • Value = 1 = TRUE; switched on
  • Value = 0 = FALSE; switched off

Note that some settings are stated in the negative, so that setting to 1 means disabling.
