After seeing so many sock knitters on the Knitlist, I thought I'd share my index of sources for sock patterns. Some of them might not be widely known but goodies nonetheless. Here 'tis:

1. Knitter's Magazine - No. 27, Summer 1992 - 3 socks by Nancy Bush plus good explanations of various heel and toe shapings.
2. Spin-Off - Winter 1992 - Their hugely popular sock issue. The 50-some page sock section was reprinted by itself.
3. Socks - More socks by the publishers of Spin-Off. This is a must have for any sock knitter!
4. Froehlich Book 21 - Socks in all sizes knit with Blauband-Special (fingering wt.) and Froehlich-Wool Sedrun (sport wt.). Includes good chart for sizing your own socks.
5. Joyce's Heels - by Joyce Williams. Sock instructions for those who hate to pick up stitches at the gussets. She uses a short row technique. Good pattern for any size sock. Contact Joyce Williams, Route 3, Box 289, Sparta, WI 54656. +1 (608) 269 3824.
6. Saddle Socks - by Joyce Williams. This is Joyce's variation of Elizabeth Zimmermann's Moccasin Sock. This is a totally refootable sock and has no sewing or weaving. Address same as above.
7. Wisconsin Winter Socks - from Cottage Creations, At the Farm on Deer Creek. Great knee-hi sock with shorter variations. Uses a strand of worsted and a strand of fingering wt. together. Knits up fast - looks good!
8. Women's Warm, Wooly Socks. A good basic, worsted wt. sock pattern. Wild River Wool Ranch.
9. Hannah's Fana Socks - Also from Wild River Wool Ranch. This is a two color sock in stripe and Fair Isle pattern done in Fingerlakes 2-ply light worsted.
10. Vogue Knitting - Fall 1992. "Have Socks, Will Travel" by Theresa Gaffey. Four sock patterns with good photos of heel turning.
11. An all time favorite, Bear Brand Hand Knit Socks. Socks for any size or gender. Still in print after 30 years. Available from Patternworks.
12. Socks! - Brunswick, Volume 815. These are two needle socks in fingering and sport wt. Includes argyles, ribbed and cabled socks. Available from Patternworks.
13. Sidna's Socks - Good pattern for three styles of worsted wt. socks - basic crew, baby cable and stripes and dots. From Patternworks.
14. Crazy Socks I and Crazy Socks II - Collections of sock patterns by Nancy Bush using Froehlich sock wool. Great selection of plain and color patterned socks. Available from The Wooly West.
15. Scandinavian Stay-On Baby Sock - by Gundren Wells. Wonderful knee-hi baby socks in cotton or wool. Available from Patternsworks.
16. Stahl Sock Book #6 and Stahl Sock Book #9. A great collection of socks for all ages. Book #9 also includes caps, toys, gloves, and baby afghans. All knit in Socka and Socka Color wool/nylon.
17. Designs for Knitting Kilt Hose and Knickerbocker Stockings. Original publication by Lady Veronica Gainford. Schoolhouse Press has enhanced it with drawings and photo. Good patterns for fancy turn-down tops and basic instructions for stockings. Available from Schoolhouse Press.
18. Folk Socks by Nancy Bush. History of footwear, instructions of various heels and toes and 18 designs for socks - all wonderful! From most sources and shops.
19. Fancy Feet by Anna Zilboorg. Patterns and techniques for Turkish socks knitted from the toe. Very distinctive and beautiful color work.
20. Knitting Around by Elizabeth Zimmermann. Well illustrated and written patterns for Moccasin Socks, Wearable Art Stockings, and Woodsman's Thick Socks. Available from Schoolhouse Press.
21. Homespun, Handknit edited by Linda Ligon. My copy is dogeared. Among mittens, caps and gloves, there are very good patterns for socks: lacy ankle socks, miniature socks, Christms sock, slipper socks, Rainbow knee socks a a good basic worsted wt. sock.
22. Birkensocks by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts. Available in a kit from Norsk Fjord Fiber. These socks are very different and wonderful! Priscilla has designed these with an hourglass heel and bumper toe. The parts that usually wear out on a sock first, won't on these! A truly unique sock. Catalogue #2.00.
