Why these programs exist?

Full Drive Defragmentation

DIRMS was the first program that I wrote.   It is a command line utility that will defragment using multiple passes your hard drive.  It can decrease fragmentation in large files by using a partial defragmentation algorithm and will also compact files to rid your system of the dreaded interstice problem.   These are options that must be specified, as they take a long time to complete, the normal operation is similar to Diskeeper, but has some differences, like moving files not just from the bottom of the drive to the top, but actually finding the largest free space that is achievable and moving files to both the front and end of the drive to get the biggest possible free space in which to defragment. You can find help on the DIRMS program here Dirms Help Information.

What does DIRMS stand for?

The name stands for Do It Right MicroSoft.   Do It Right - build a file system that doesn't fragment practically every medium or large file written to the drive.   We had to come up with some name, and Microsoft hasn't built a good defragmenter program into its operation system since DOS.   This program attempts to overcome some limitations with the big boys, like Diskeeper, O&O Defrag, etc.  It was actually MS that caused fragmentation in the first place.   The original NTFS without compression was great, very little if any fragmentation at all.  When they introduced compression into the file system, the compression engine caused massive problems for both uncompressed and compressed files.  Anyway, we were disappointed with the work that Executive Software performed on our drives, so we set out to do a better job.  We think we've done that, but you can be the judge of whether it is better or not and at least it is free.
