Assistant Editor, GameSpot News

Summary: GameSpot News is seeking an assistant editor to join the exisitng news staff. This is a full time position at the CNET offices in San Francisco. The Reporter will be responsible for reporting, writing, and posting news stories throughout the day. The ideal candidate should have a background covering news (preferably the business and/or technology beats) and be comfortable writing under deadline pressure. The hire will also maintain close ties to the industry itself-including developers, publishers, and marketing and PR staff.

Qualifications: Excellent writing skills are a must - A college degree in writing, English, journalism, or technology would be a plus, but is not a requirement - Time spent working for a city newspaper, a college newspaper, or Web site filing stories under deadline pressure is a necessity - The candidate should have an interest in the game beat and interested in writing game news over and above reviews or previews. Interested candidates should include clips (urls) with their submissions.


Graphic Designer, GameSpot

Summary: Qualified candidate must be a hands-on, team player who is independent, opinionated, good with tight deadlines, detail oriented and able to manage multiple projects from initial concept through final production. This person will be responsible for developing all consumer marketing collateral, including but not limited to: registration pages, promotional inserts, online ads, and e-mails. This individual must exhibit the ability to create new marketing design solutions while adhering to style guidelines and brand objectives. Candidate will work closely with Direct, Consumer Marketing and Senior Creative Director to identify opportunities for new creative tests.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Arts in graphic design (or equivalent training and experience) and at least 3 years experience working in a professional graphic design environment, preferably in direct marketing design
  • Expert in Mac-based graphic design software including InDesign or Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and Power Point
  • Most productive working in a team-oriented atmosphere
  • Must be adept to working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Knowledge of printing process a plus
  • Familiarity with video game industry a plus


Senior Software Engineer, GameSpot

Summary: The Senior Software Engineer for CNET's Games and Entertainment division will be an integral part of the development team. Developer will be responsible for building and maintaining a new site in the entertainment group. The primary development will be related to internal web-based editorial and production tools, integrating existing components such as forums, journals, and hardware database already developed for GameSpot and MP3.com. Responsibilities will also extend to any of the applications associated with the Games and Entertainment initiatives. Linux, PHP, and MySQL are an absolute must, but a deep understanding of all web technologies from a technical and product perspective are also very important. The applicant must have a passion for providing a great user experience rather than just looking for technical challenges. You will be working with a group of people that are all Musicians and Gamers that are very passionate about the information our sites provide and understand what the user wants to see. We are very focused on getting the user want he wants as fast as possible. A passion for Games, Music, TV, Movies and all things in the entertainment world is a must!

Qualifications:

  • Has excellent knowledge of fundamentals of software engineering and proficiency in Linux, PHP, and mySQL
  • Must have built a site from scratch professionally
  • Must work quickly and understand that the main goal is what the user experience is
  • Has a propensity to adapt to many different facets of software development quickly and efficiently
  • Must be able to design and build web-based tools for editorial and production staff as well as design and build for the live site
  • Proven skills and abilities to meet objectives on both routine and out of the ordinary assignments
  • Should have ample experience working cross-functionally with editorial and product management
  • Requires at least 7 years professional experience


Technical Producer, GameSpot

Summary: The technical producer will have a variety of duties within the CNET Games & Entertainment group. These will range from short-term daily publishing tasks to longer-term CSS and HTML coding projects. Tasks may include using publishing tools to post stories, batch image processing, producing HTML newsletters, building mini-sites, revising and building online publishing tools, helping code new sites and redesigns of existing sites, and other tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, and PhotoShop required
  • Familiarity with JavaScript, PHP, Smarty, SQL, Flash, XSLT, and Debabelizer a bonus
  • Must be able to learn new skills and processes quickly
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills necessary
  • Must be able to work out of San Francisco office
  • B.A. or B.S. required
