Bush Didn’t Lie About Weapons Of Mass Destruction - Part I

May 24, 2004

By Tom Barrett

“Years before George W. Bush became our president, most prominent Democrats wanted Saddam Hussein's head on a platter. Now those same Democrats say that George W. lied to us and Hussein never had any WMD’s, and the only reason president Bush went into Iraq was for the oil.” - JR Whipple

Many people today claim that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction (WMD’s) and that therefore there was no justification for our invasion of Iraq. These people fall into one of the following categories: 1) They don’t care enough about what is happening to study the issues, so they simply parrot whatever the talking heads on TV said on the nightly news; 2) They care, but have been confused by the continual false reporting in the liberal media; or 3) They know the WMD’s existed, and they are lying for political reasons. Today we will talk about the third group, most of whom (surprise, surprise) are politicians.

First, a little perspective. Virtually the whole world knew that Saddam had WMD’s. We all saw the results on TV when he used chemical weapons against Iraqi Kurds and against Iran. He ADMITTED he had WMD’s in his report to the UN. We have solid evidence that he was continuing to refine and improve his existing WMD’s and develop new ones right up until the time we attacked.

Then where have these weapons gone? It is possible, but unlikely, that Saddam destroyed them before the invasion. If he had done so, some traces would exist. We know that he buried huge fighter-bombers in the desert, because we have recovered some of them. It would have been much easier to bury much smaller canisters of chemical weapons, nerve gas and even nuclear weapons, which would be much harder to locate. And there is mounting evidence that the Iraqis transported WMD’s to Syria for safekeeping in the weeks and months prior to the war. Israel claims to have aerial photographs of a convoy of WMD’s leaving Iraq ten days before the war began.

Then there is the very interesting discovery by Jordan of twenty tons of chemical weapons just before al Qaeda terrorists used them against that nation. (See Internet link below.) I wonder where they got them? That’s not the kind of stuff you pick up at Wal-Mart. I wonder is Saddam might have sold them to the terrorists? No, he’s too nice a guy.

Finally, some of Saddam’s old WMD’s have surfaced in Iraq. An artillery shell containing the deadly Saran nerve gas was detonated in an attack on Coalition forces last week. I believe this is just the tip of the iceberg. As has been often said, Iraq is as large as California, and it is no easy task to find a canister the size of a trash can in an area that large. But, whether we find them in Iraq or Syria, we will find Saddam’s WMD’s. It’s just a matter of when.

Meanwhile, we know what the liars and politicians (some believe these words are synonyms, but I believe there are still some honest politicians) are saying TODAY about WMD’s. “This war is totally unjustified.” “Where are the WMD’s?” “Bush started the war to get oil.” But let’s talk what they have said in the past. What follows will either amuse or enrage you.

Let me note here that I received the same emails that many of you did containing quotes from liberals about WMD’s, most with no documentation. But I did something with that few of you did, because it is my job to give you verifiable facts. I researched every quote, found some to be valid (and provided the sources for you) and rejected others for a variety of reasons.

I am glad I did this, because I found that even some national columnists had been snookered. One attributed a quote from Robert Byrd to Teddy Kennedy. Another had a statement from a letter to the President, supposedly from “Senator Bob Graham and others.” The only problem was that Bob Graham was not one of the nine signers. Others quoted speakers out of context; the individual actually spoke the words cited, but by not providing the context, the meaning of those words was changed.

I did include quotes from individuals who were arguing against the war but who expressed beliefs and mentioned facts that reinforced the common belief that Saddam had WMD’s. Leftists have claimed that such quotes should not be used because the speakers are anti-war. I believe it is valid to use them because they demonstrate the twisted logic of the speakers. They acknowledge that Saddam is a grave danger to the world, and then proceed to try to justify doing nothing.

I was interested to find that many of the Democrats quoted had removed their original speeches from their websites so that you could not hold them accountable. Fortunately I was able to find other sites where respectable journalists and others had quoted them. If you have trouble finding the quote on the web page given, hit Alt-F and type in the name of the person quoted or a word or phrase. This will take you directly to their words.

Let’s start with the man who wants to be our Commander-in-Chief. On February 2, 2004 the Wall Street Journal asked the question, “Was Kerry brainwashed?” in response to his flip-flopping on the subject of the war. (See link below.) Perhaps if elected, he should be called the Waffler-in-Chief.

Even liberal Washington Post columnist David Broder is confused. He recently suggested to Mr. Kerry that it would be difficult for him to explain to voters that "your 'no' [in 1991] did not mean no, and your 'yes' [in 2002] did not mean yes." This of course is in reference to Kerry’s repeated votes for and against the same issues. But let’s hear it from Senator Flip-Flop himself…

"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force-- if necessary-- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security."
- Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002

"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime. He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation. And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction. So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real."

"The threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real...He has had a free hand for 4 years to reconstitute these weapons, allowing the world, during the interval, to lose the focus we had on weapons of mass destruction and the issue of proliferation."

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."
- Letter to President Clinton, signed by Senators John Kerry, Tom Daschle, Carl Levin and others Oct. 9, 1998

But let’s not stop with a wannabe president. How about the public statements of the Liar-in-Chief for eight years and his staff? Considering their recent statements on the war, these are some very stark contradictions indeed. Maybe they don’t think we’re smart enough to look up these statements on the ‘Net. Maybe Al Gore is starting to regret inventing the Internet in the first place.

“The UNSCOM inspectors believe that Iraq still has stockpiles of chemical and biological munitions, a small force of Scud-type missiles, and the capacity to restart quickly its production program and build many, many more weapons…And some day, some way, I guarantee you, he'll use the arsenal…One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line."

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program."

"Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power... We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country "
- EX-Vice-President Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

Most of his fellow Dems waited a year or more to reverse their statements, but Gore actually contradicted himself in the same speech. He made the statement above at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. But after making the case for war, he came out against it, according to the Washington Post:

Military action to dislodge Saddam Hussein will “severely damage” the overall war on terrorism and “weaken” U.S. leadership in the world.

- EX-Vice-President Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

SOURCE: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A56356-2002Sep23?language=printer

After dropping out of the race for the Democrat nomination, he went even further:

"I am deeply concerned that the policy we [the Bush administration] are presently following with respect to Iraq has the potential to seriously damage our ability to win the war against terrorism and to weaken our ability to lead the world in this new century."

- EX-Vice-President Al Gore, April 20, 2003

This is the same Al Gore who, when running against George W., promised America:

"We have made it clear that it is our policy to see Saddam Hussein gone...And if entrusted with the presidency, my resolve will never waver."

(After you stop laughing, please read the rest of the article.)

While researching this article I came up with such a mass of evidence of liberal lies that it was impossible to include them all in one column. Check back next week for installment two, when I relate the actual words of other members of the Clinton administration, the Democrat leaders of both houses, Senators “KKK” Byrd and “Tipsy Teddy” Kennedy, and of course the woman America loves to loathe, Hillary.

Let me leave you with this thought. In 1998 when Slick Willie was trying to drum up support for going to war against Iraq, all the Democrats rallied around their president and spoke out for war. Then Clinton checked the polls and decided against war. He did, however, indulge in the pre-emptive strikes described above to draw attention away from his impending impeachment and the bad press he was getting for seducing a young intern.

Then W, who follows his conviction instead of the polls, did the right thing for America and attacked Iraq. Suddenly these same Democrats who slavishly supported Bill’s war were viciously attacking Bush for doing exactly what Clinton proposed to do in 1998.

Who do you want in the White House next year? John Flip-Flop Kerry, or a man who speaks out of only one side of his mouth? If you want a leader, make sure your friends read this article. Let the liberals hang themselves with their own words.
