Football update, posted by AlexN (11:58am)
And another falls to the mighty EA Juggernaut. The news of the NCAA signing an exclusive deal with EA Sports to make them the only producers of collegiate football games on consoles and handheld devices is hardly a shock, especially since EA's been the only one makin college football games for a while now. Still, you can't help but feel a little a knot in your gut over this one, especially if you're a fan of the 2K games. The NCAA might have been one of their last, best hopes for a licensed football product, should they continue to make football games, and now those dreams are dashed. At the very least, EA's NCAA Football games haven't been too shabby in recent years, and last year's game was actually a pretty big step up in quality for the franchise overall.

Other sports updates, posted by BrianEk (5:04pm)

Someone tell me...

... why Tiger Woods is on the front page of ESPN despite being currently tied for 36th--and six shots off the lead--after the first round of the Masters? And while we're on that subject...

... after such as fuss in 2003, has the mainstream sports media forgotten that Augusta National still doesn't allow women golfers as members?

... why the San Francisco 49ers are currently eagerly pursuing Aaron Rodgers and Alex Smith, when a QB is the least of that team's worries?

... what kind of a name is Ron Mexico?

... how "Fever Pitch" ever came to be? And while we're on that subject...

... how come people keep giving movie roles to Jimmy Fallon?

... how long will the Nationals will stay in first place in the NL East?

Baseball update, posted by BrianEk (9:28pm)

It's a standard gripe about baseball, both real and virtual: the games take too long to play. Playing hardball games on a pitch-by-pitch basis can make for a long season, especially if you're the kind of gamer that refuses to leave games to chance via a simulation or manager mode. Enter Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball's speed play mode, a streamlined form of hitting the bases--where pitching and batting take the forefront, and fielding plays second fiddle. Games that normally take 40 minutes or more, can be condensed into 15 minute sessions and still give you control over what happens on the field.

There's still a lot more of PCB we're waiting to see, and a lot of questions to be answered regarding how the game plays. The inclusion of a mode such as speed play, however, means that at the very least, Nintendo and developers Exile Interactive are aiming to deliver a sports game consisting of something more than your standard set of modes and features.

Racing update, posted by BrianEk (5:53pm)

A few days ago, I ended a journal post with the question: What features would you like to see in the just-announced Burnout Revenge? The response from fans of the series was pretty encouraging and all over the map; obviously this is a racing series that people really care about and want to see continually evolve.

At least a portion of the speculation on the next Burnout game can now be put to rest, thanks to our latest Q&A with Criterion Studios' Alex Ward who addresses some of the specific features and modes that will be found in the next game. The most exciting has to be the concept of traffic checking, which is essentially using surrounding traffic as weaponry in your automotive onslaught.

Based on what you've read, what do you think of Burnout Revenge's new traffic features?

Racing update, posted by BrianEk (4:22pm)

Forget Forza. Take off, Enthusia. Sayonara, Gran Turismo 4. For a big group of racing fanatics out there, the announcement of another Burnout game--the fourth installment in the series is due this fall--is big news. While much isn't known about the game so far, save for a pair of screenshots, one thing is for sure: Burnout Revenge has big tires to fill. After all Burnout 3: Takedown was our 2004 winner for Best Driving Game, and with good reason.

Burnout 3 combined sublime speed, wonderfully destructible cars, loads of unlockable content, zippy online play, and challenging gameplay that rewarded you in nearly every facet of the game. Burnout Revenge has to do all of this... and bring something new to the table. Like I said, big tires to fill.

So what features and game modes would you like to see in Burnout 4?
