Welcome

Hello! The Trent University Rowing Club and the Peterborough Rowing Club would like to welcome you to the Head of the Trent. The Head of the Trent is an annual event held on the Otonabee River in Peterborough every autumn. The regatta is a 4.7 km head race down the Otonabee, which finishes under the Faryon Bridge on the Trent University campus. The regatta is open to highschool, university, and club crews. Head of the Trent weekend is also homecoming at Trent University, so there are lots of festivities going on all weekend long.

History

The Trent University Rowing Club was founded in 1970 by the first president and coach at the club, Chris Leach. In the same year, the first annual Head of the Trent regatta was held. Crews from Brock University, the University of Toronto and Trent University raced at the inaugural event. Since then, the regatta has grown into the largest single day head race in North America, with over 2,000 participants racing in 2000. The regatta continues to draw athletes from all age and skill levels, from highschool racers to members of the Canadian National team. Participants come from all over Canada, the United States.

Future

The future looks bright for the Head of the Trent with a record number of participants rowing each year. The Trent University Rowing Club and the Peterborough Rowing Club hope to attract more crews, clubs, and spectators each year. Future plans include incorporating dash races (500m in length) into the event. The dash races would start just past the finish line of the head race (near Champlain College) and race down towards the Peterborough Rowing Club.
