President Thabo Mbeki will visit the Ivory Coast on Sunday as part of his African Union and Economic Community of West African States mandate to help that country solve its problems.
Department of foreign affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said on Thursday that Mbeki would be accompanied by the Minister of Defence, Mosiuoa Lekota, and the Deputy Foreign Minister, Aziz Pahad.
Mbeki was expected to hold discussions with, among others, the president of the Ivory Coast, Laurent Gbagbo, and prime minister Seydou Diarra in Abidjan on Sunday.
The principal objective of the visit is to review progress in the implementation of the roadmap developed by all parties in the Ivory Coast following consultations with Mbeki since November 9.
Upon the conclusion of his visit to the Ivory Coast, Mbeki will visit Libreville, Gabon, where he will lead his delegation to the Summit of the AU Peace and Security Council.
He will brief the council on his discussions with all role players in the Ivory Coast conflict and the status of the implementation of the roadmap.
