“Who Will Walk In The Darkness With You” is the bold debut album from a new band called The Black Swans.
The dark melancholy of the The Black Swans puts them in a category all their own. I won’t even overstep the boundary of genre classification when speaking of this band. Much like other wonderfully original bands (like Danielson, or They Might Be Giants) The Black Swans are hard to pigeonhole. The only band that I would dare to compare them to is The Loudermilk Hotel, and even then I am stretching it. The Black Swans swoop in with "Who Will Walk In The Darkness With You" to deliver a full package of mysterious folk rock. The guitar work is captivating and the unique lead vocals are the quivering voice of a poet.
I have to admit that I'm still not sure how I feel about The Black Swans. The first time I listened to "Who Will Walk In The Darkness With You" I really didn't like it. The second time it was much easier to tolerate; the third, even more so. I thought of renouncing The Black Swans at first, but something tells me that this music is an acquired taste. I think I'll stick with it a bit longer before I make final decisions. I will, however, say this: if you listen to The Black Swans be prepared for something quite, dark, lonely, and refreshingly original.
