IMDb Movie of the Day
Katie Holmes is most formidable in indie films. After Abandon, her first attempt to carry a major production, went bust, Holmes rebounded in Pieces of April as the titular April, the black sheep of the Burns family looking to make good by her mom and dad by hosting Thanksgiving at her teeny Lower East Side apartment. Peter Hedges, who wrote What's Eating Gilbert Grape and co-authored About a Boy, is graceful in his directorial debut, achieving an emotional depth that is resonant, simplistic, and only slightly contrived. April is a minor rebel, and the Burnses are all somewhat matchless; you get the feeling that April fled from suburban Pennsylvania for New York City like any smart, displaced high school graduate might. With the exception of her mother's breast cancer, there's no severe family history that needs to be unraveled and rolled back up as the film develops. Accordingly, April doesn't dig far back into her past as her entire family travels to NYC in their cramped station wagon; she's more concerned with the fact that she can't really cook ... and that her oven doesn't even work. As she is forced to pact with her assorted neighbors (including Sean Hayes in full-on fusty queen mode), her clan (headed by Oliver Platt and Patricia Clarkson, who scored a Best Supporting Actress nomination) finds distractions along the highways and in gas station restrooms. Derek Luke, who plays April's boyfriend, is wonderfully understated in a role that isn't quite necessary and is kind of a cheat overall. But at least the digital video format and handheld camerawork makes sense within April's dingy apartment and chaotic building as a whole. - Arno Kazarian
