Emily
Hurricane Emily Track
(September 20 to September 26, 1987)
Emily originated on September 20 as a depression, while located about 1100 kilometres southeast of the Windward Islands. Later on the same day, Emily reached tropical storm status. Tropical Storm Emily moved northeastward through the Caribbean and reached hurricane strength while located 320 kilometres south of Puerto Rico. Emily achieved a maximum wind speed of 204 kilometres per hour (110 knots). Hurricane Emily continued to strengthen while racing towards Bermuda, passing directly over Bermuda on the 25th. The hurricane continued to accelerate. However, on the afternoon of the 26th, it became extratropical as it sped northeastward over the colder waters of the North Atlantic.
Emily was the fastest moving hurricane of any known hurricane in this century. Emily claimed a total of three lives and was responsible for $75 million in damages.
