Sculptured counterweights helping provide a 9 metre wide channel for navigation

This bridge at St Augustine's Reach, Bristol, is the result of a unique collaboration between consulting engineer and artist, to produce a much needed crossing of Bristol's floating harbour. Arup's role included all engineering aspects of the design, co-ordination with the artist, assistance with planning procedures, public exhibition, advice during construction and commissioning.

The footbridge comprises two fixed spans and a central 11 metre lifting span which provides a clear 9 metre wide channel for navigation. The counterweights and piers are unusual sculpted forms; an example of the cross industry collaboration that took place on this project. The bridge provides a key route for pedestrians, following a gently curving alignment, with easy gradients for the disabled. A small observation point is provided for views of the reach. The design of all elements and the choice of material were developed to fit the context of the structure at the heart of the harbour.
