Republicans Don't Trust Paperless Voting Machines
During an interview with Democratic Congressman Rush Holt of New Jersey on 7/31/04, Holt made the startling announcement that the Republican Party has sent a mailer to its members in Miami-Dade county telling them to use ABSENTEE BALLOTS rather than electronic voting machines!!
Jane Musgrave reports in the Palm Beach Post of July 30, 2004:
After spending months blocking Democratic efforts to equip touch-screen voting machines with printers to produce paper ballots, Gov. Jeb Bush on Thursday found his position at odds with his own party. Continue reading >>

CPA Bilks Iraq Coffers of Millions
Charges of fraud in Iraq contracts - U.S. authority lost track of millions, auditor reports by T. Christian Miller, Los Angeles Times Friday, July 30, 2004
Washington -- A comprehensive examination of the U.S.-led agency that oversaw the rebuilding of Iraq has triggered at least 27 criminal investigations and produced evidence of millions of dollars' worth of fraud, waste and abuse, according to a report by the Coalition Provisional Authority's inspector general.
Register Voters in Swing States
Polls that say the country is "equally divided" are only partly correct.
"50 % of eligible people who usually vote" are split evenly between the two candidates.
However, that leaves another 50% of eligible voters that are either too turned off to vote or can't get away from work to vote or have never voted before. Two major voting blocks are being targeted by voter registration drives: Young people ages 18-24 and single women/single moms.
You can to this website and sign up for a voter registration car trip to a swing state.
You'll have a great time, meet some neat people, see a new city and be doing something worthwhile. What's not to like?

Oops! I Goofed!
On July 26, 2004 I posted an article entitled "FOX: Look into Your TV, You Are Getting Sleepy, Kerry's Bad for Business, Kerry's Bad for Business" that, in essence, stated the facts correctly but assumed that no other media outlet was reporting the same facts in the same way as FOX was. As a result I made flippant remarks that implied that Terry Keenan was alone in her conclusions. Thanks to Johnny Dollar (a name many of you will recognize) I now realize that the financial surmises that Ms. Keenan made during that show were in fact being reported by other media outlets, including the New York Times. I've altered the text of the original posting and am reposting it here under today's date. I try to be as accurate as possible and apologize to my readers and again to Ms. Keenan for my error. All comments made to the original posting are here as well. - Marie Therese

At the end of John Kerry's speech, David Brooks, conservative columnist for the NYT and election commentator for PBS, summed it up really well:
BROOKS: "It was a very good speech, one of the best I've ever seen him give, almost a Republican speech in many ways....a Teddy Roosevelt speech.....he's had a good convention. We can say that now."
SHIELDS: "John Kerry had to give the speech of his life and he did....It's a speech you could not tell, if you read it, whether the speech was given by a Democrat or a Republican."
