Santa Clara University's California Legacy Project presents an evening of poetry in tribute to the life and work of William Everson, farmer, conscientious objector, agnostic, pantheist, Dominican friar, fine printer, and deeply religious poet.

The event marks the publication of a new volume of Everson's work, Dark God of Eros: A William Everson Reader, edited by Albert Gelpi. The newest volume of the California Legacy Series places the work of William Everson alongside the work of other important California writers.

The books in the California Legacy Series appear in a variety of formats, anthologies, single author collections, and reprints of important, hard-to-locate works that have each become memorable California classics.

Robert Hass, a San Francisco native, has spent most of his life in the Bay Area, receiving his B.A. from St. Mary's College in Moraga, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. He served two terms as the U.S. Poet Laureate from 1995-1997. Among his many books are Field Guide (1973), Praise (1980), and Human Wishes (1990). He has taught English at UC Berkeley since 1989.

Albert Gelpi received his M.A. from Tulane and his Ph.D. from Harvard. His books include A Coherent Splendor: The American Poetic Renaissance, 1910-1950 (1990) and (as editor) The Wild God of the World: An Anthology of Robinson Jeffers. Prof. Gelpi teaches English at Stanford University.
