Welcome to Santa Clara University's Department of English

The Department of English affords students a thorough undergraduate education in the liberal arts centered on the history, theory, and aesthetics of literature and the art of writing. The knowledge and skills developed in English courses provide excellent preparation for careers in law, government, business, communications, and education, as well as for graduate study in literature or writing.

The mission of the English Department's programs and courses is to help students investigate, analyze, use, and enjoy the practices of the English language and its literatures and their variety of genres, traditions, and periods; to develop creative, critical, and theoretical expertise in the history, rhetoric, and aesthetics of writing; and to encourage initiative and responsibility for a critical interpretation of society and culture.
