In Theaters: The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
Opening in limited release this week is The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, director and actor Tommy Lee Jones' and writer Guillermo Arriaga's contemplation of a friendship and the physical, emotional and spiritual journeys it inspires. Winner of the Best Actor (for Jones) and Best Screenplay (for Arriaga) at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada reveals the uneasy co-mingling of two distinct cultures, specifically the violence and abuse inflicted as the result of racism. The film focuses on the story of Pete Perkins (Jones), a ranch foreman who, after his friend Melquiades (Julio Cedillo) is found killed and hastily buried is the desert (and subsequently the tiny town's graveyard), decides to honor a promise made to his departed friend. Perkins, with the help of Mike Norton (Barry Pepper) -- the border patrol officer he kidnaps to teach a lesson about thoughtless action -- sets out on a complicated journey to Mexico with Melquiades' body, in search of his friend's village where he can be laid to rest a third, and final time.
