CONVERSION UNDERWAY
This
article was written February 20, 2004.
I'm still not accepting submissions or any contact whatsoever. But
I'd figure I'd better update everyone on what's going on here after
two weeks.
The
good news is that I feel that the user end (read: the part of the
site most people will see) is ready for public beta testing. I think
I have the code as hack-proof as it can get (meaning that as far
as I know, people won't be able to crash the site). The major problem
facing The Furry Web Directory now is the use of a database. Any
time you open that database to user input, you're going to have
the potential to have trouble. Of course, the bad news is that crackers
seem to have to much time on their hands and will always find something,
so the possibility can never be ruled out.
I'm
just starting up on the administration end (the part most people
won't see) and security will probably play a big part in any delays.
I've already "wasted" one whole on the subject of security,
but seeing as how I don't want this site to crumble because of some
pedestrian security hole, that time can never be considered "wasted"
in my eyes. Once the routines for reviewing sites that people submit
and a routine to push database updates (adding/deleting fields/tables)
is done, everything else should be pretty pedestrian.
Once
again, the idea of tihs whole shabang is to have everything
concerning The Furry Web Directory online. I don't
want this site to be hampered by Microsoft technologies any more
and I don't like the idea of this web site being handled
by just one person. When The Furry Web Directory opens again, it
will be completely open to volunteers who, as a group, can ensure
The Furry Web Directory remains current.
