History of The Ministry of Construction and Transportation

The Ministry of Transportation was first established with the launching of the government of the Republic of Korea on August 15, 1948 and was put in charge of roads, railroads, air transport and maritime affairs.

On June 18, 1962, the Ministry of Construction and Transportation was set up for more efficient development of the national territories and took its place as a central government organization responsible for industrial locationing, urban and housing affairs, water resources and matters relating to roads. The last was transferred from the Ministry of Transportation to the newly born ministry.

The Ministry of Construction and Transportation was born in December 1994 when the two ministries were merged in order to better deal with traffic congestion and to establish more efficient system of linkage between investment in and operation of infrastructures.

In the 1990s efficient transport measures arose as an important task following rapid growth in the number of automobiles in the 1980s with rise in incomes which in turn led to chronic traffic congestion and sudden increase in ensuing social costs.

Combining of the two ministries enabled the government to deal more efficiently with the growing transportation and logistics problems with systematic construction and operation of transport related infrastructures.
