Welcome to International Programs at Duke Law
Larissa Meli"Drawing students from all over the world for its historical prestige and innovative teaching methods, Duke Law School is the ideal institution for the pursuit of professional development beyond any geographic barrier. Duke's promotion of a close interaction between international and American students is so real that I have been given the opportunity to add my diverse cultural background to the Duke Bar Association as an LL.M. representative and the honor to lead the Italian Language Lunch Table, which allows participants to improve their knowledge of the language and culture of my beautiful country. This is just one of the many examples of how being a Duke international student is not only a prestigious academic qualification but also one of the most enriching and memorable periods of a lifetime."

What our students say and do

Faculty and students at Duke Law School have a strong interest in international and comparative law. This is reflected in the enthusiasm for our LL.M. and S.J.D. programs for foreign-trained lawyers, as well as in the programs of study, centers, array of courses, and activities with an international focus. Duke’s J.D./LL.M. Program in International and Comparative Law is another good example. Founded over fifteen years ago, it was the first joint degree program of its kind. While the J.D./LL.M. and J.D. programs attract a reasonable number of international students, the greatest number of overseas students enrolls in the LL.M. program for foreign-trained lawyers. A handful of very able international students are also members of the S.J.D. program.

Students on campusInternational alumni often say their year at Duke was the best year of their lives. Folks at Duke are flattered but not really surprised. Duke Law students work hard and play hard, and they are among the nicest students anywhere. At Duke, everyone makes a special effort to welcome international students and to encourage them to become a significant part of the student body. International students are represented in the Duke Bar Association (our student government), on the staff of the Journal of Comparative and International Law, on the executive board of the International Law Society, on sports teams, as leaders of foreign language lunch tables, and much more. Duke Law School faculty members are renowned for their expertise, their scholarship, and their excellent teaching ability. They welcome student interaction. Our library and classroom information technology are among the most sophisticated of any law school. At Duke, we have a very professional International Studies Office staff of five persons, four of whom are primarily dedicated to making sure that international students have the fullest possible experience during their academic studies at Duke Law School. Duke University campus is unrivaled in its beauty, and the area offers a comfortable, relaxed life style. No wonder that the number of international applications continues to rise each year.
