Faculty and students at Duke Law School have a strong interest in international and comparative law. This is reflected in the enthusiasm for our LL.M. and S.J.D. programs for foreign-trained lawyers, as well as in the programs of study, centers, array of courses, and activities with an international focus. Duke’s J.D./LL.M. Program in International and Comparative Law is another good example. Founded over fifteen years ago, it was the first joint degree program of its kind. While the J.D./LL.M. and J.D. programs attract a reasonable number of international students, the greatest number of overseas students enrolls in the LL.M. program for foreign-trained lawyers. A handful of very able international students are also members of the S.J.D. program.
International alumni often say their year at Duke was the best year of their lives. Folks at Duke are flattered but not really surprised. Duke Law students work hard and play hard, and they are among the nicest students anywhere. At Duke, everyone makes a special effort to welcome international students and to encourage them to become a significant part of the student body. International students are represented in the Duke Bar Association (our student government), on the staff of the Journal of Comparative and International Law, on the executive board of the International Law Society, on sports teams, as leaders of foreign language lunch tables, and much more.
