Article content

In case you did not already know, everyone can edit an article on Wikipedia. So if you see something wrong, just click "Edit this page" (there are very few protected pages).

If your question or comment is about a particular article, then use the 'Discuss this page' link that is displayed when you are viewing that page. See Wikipedia:Talk page for details.

To talk to a particular user about article content or any other matter, use their talk page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:user_name) or click the 'email this user' link on their user page. Some users can also be contacted via instant messaging, see Wikipedia:Instant Messaging Wikipedians. To find out who wrote parts of a particular article, you can peruse the page history.

General questions

Ask questions about Wikipedia itself or register general complaints on our Village pump, a sort of general purpose message board. Questions that do not belong there will be moved somewhere else. This is a fairly active discussion page, so you might get an edit conflict after clicking "Save" (meaning that the page has been updated while you edited, and the resulting conflict now has to be resolved). To avoid this entirely, you can append a question directly to the page. Please consult the FAQ first.

If you want to consult the collective wisdom of the Wikipedia community on any subject, there is also the Wikipedia:Reference desk.

Remember to check the page periodically to find out if you have received an answer.

Press questions

Reporters and other interested people are encouraged to send an email to our mailing list. If you are not a subscriber to this mailing list, then your email has to be approved by a mailing list administrator before it is posted to the list. If you plan to post many emails to the list, then please visit Wikipedia:Mailing lists for subscription information.

You can also contact Wikimedia founder Jimbo Wales directly. If you want to contact regular Wikipedians, Wikipedians and Wikipedia:Administrators would be good starting points.

Policy

Wikipedia policy can be discussed on the mailing lists, specifically wikien-l for the English Wikipedia and wikipedia-l for global project policy.

Removing and restoring pages

If you think that a page should be deleted, then you can list it on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion. If you feel that a page you read or helped create was deleted by mistake or unfairly, then please feel free to argue your case at Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion.

Vandalism

Since Wikipedia is a wiki we get our share of vandalism. If you see vandalism to a page then please revert the page to its last version (see: Wikipedia:How to revert a page to an earlier version for details). If you do that and the user is still vandalizing pages, then please alert other Wikipedians about this on our Vandalism in progress page. Then, if needed, a Wikipedia Administrator may block the IP address or user name of the vandal.

Being blocked from editing

Sometimes it becomes necessary to block the IP address being used by a vandal (see above). Rarely, however, that vandal may share the same IP address with another person trying to edit Wikipedia.

If you are such a person, you should follow the directions on the 'Blocked user' message that is displayed when you try to edit. You can also directly contact a Wikipedia Administrator by visiting Wikipedia:Administrators#List of administrators (look for Administrators who have "email" links by their user names, then use those links).

Copyright questions

If you are the owner of content that is being used on Wikipedia without your permission, then please go here for instructions.

If you merely suspect that content on a particular page contains a copyright infringement, then you may replace the text with the boilerplate copyright infringement notice text here. Then you should list that page at Wikipedia:Possible copyright infringements.

If you would like permission to use Wikipedia content, you should be happy to know that our license (the GNU Free Documentation License) already grants you permission to use it - even commercially. However, you do have to follow the terms of our license. Please see Wikipedia:Copyrights for details.

Wikipedia software

MediaWiki is the general purpose wiki engine used by Wikipedia. Related questions can be asked on the wikitech-l mailing list. See also the MediaWiki User's Guide.

Software bugs and feature requests

Please see Wikipedia:Bug reports to learn how to submit bug reports and feature requests.
