Max Nevzoroff, 79; Sarah Anne Smith, 68; Virginia Vaughn, 82; Delmar Zentmire, 86; Dennis Saathoff, 65


Max Nevzoroff, 79

Lifelong Atka resident Max Nevzoroff, 79, died March 27, 2004, at Providence Extended Care Center of health complications and pneumonia.

Visitation will be at 3 p.m. today at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St. A Panikhida service will be at 4 p.m. Burial will be in St. Nicholas Church Cemetery in Atka at a later date.

Mr. Nevzoroff was born Feb. 3, 1925, in Atka, to Ilarion and Pariscovia Nevzoroff. During World War II, he and his family were interned. While they were interned, his father died at Killisnoo on the west coast of Admiralty Island in Southeast Alaska.

Before the war, Mr. Nevzoroff worked as a trapper. From the 1950s until 1960 he worked in the northern fur seal harvest in the Pribilof Islands, and from 1960 until 1969 in the king crab fisheries. He did janitorial work from 1970 until his retirement at the age of 65.

Mr. Nevzoroff was a member of the Russian Orthodox Church and had served the church as a Starosta since 1941. He was awarded the distinguished St. Herman of Alaska Cross for his service.

He was a shareholder of Aleut Corp. and Atxam Corp. and was a tribal member of Atka IRA Council.

Mr. Nevzoroff loved four-wheeling, and rod and reel fishing for salmon. In his younger years, he enjoyed camping.

His great-nephew, George Kudrin, said: "He was affectionately known by both adults and children as 'Uncle Max' in the community of Atka. His friendly smile and occasional laughter will be sorely missed by friends and relatives."

Survivors include his nephews and nieces, Mary Ring of Winchester Bay, Ore., Evelyn Curley of Coos Bay, Ore., Henery Dirks of Fairbanks, Clara Golodoff of Unalaska, Pauline Golodoff, Victor Golodoff, Spiridon Zaochney, Nick Nevzoroff, Louis Nevzoroff, Rose Golodoff and Millie Prokopeuff of Atka, Polly Kochergin of St. Paul Island, Bernice May, Sam Stineburg and David Stineburg of Wasilla, Kristina Stineburg of Palmer and Paul Mohammad of Anchorage; and an extended family of great- and great-great-nephews and -nieces too numerous to be named.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Vasha, and brothers, Daniel, Peter, Mike and John.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Saint Tikhon Russian Orthodox Church, P.O. Box 141872, Anchorage 99514.

Arrangements were with Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

Sarah Anne Smith, 68

Anchorage resident Sarah Anne Smith, 68, died March 26, 2004, at her home.

A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. The Rev. Craig Loecker will officiate.

She was born Jan. 1, 1936, in Dayton, Ohio, to Maynard and Alvina (Borger) Slusser.

She moved to Alaska in 2003. Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. She enjoyed sewing.

"She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who always placed her family first," the family said. "We know she will be looking over us, always. Though she will be missed by all, there will always be a place in our hearts where she will live on forever."

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Jerry of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Steve Torre of Anchorage; granddaughters, Nicole and Denise Torre; grandsons, Alex and Greg Torre, all of Anchorage; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Linda Smith of Hardinsburg, Ky., Robert and Mary Collier of Evansville, Ind., and Robert and Wilma Smith of Orlando, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

One son, Thomas Smith, preceded her in death.

Memorial donations may be given to Living Tree Memorial at Bell's Nursery or Hospice of Anchorage.

Anchorage Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Vaughn, 82

Virginia Vaughn, 82, died March 27, 2004, at the Mary Conrad Center in Anchorage.

A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. today at the Mary Conrad Center.

Ms. Vaughn was born Sept. 8, 1921, in Kingsville, Texas, to John and Myrtle Denham.

She lived most of her life in Houma, La., and was most recently employed by Hart Furniture there.

She moved from Houma to Anchorage in January 2002 and was able to spend the last years of her life enjoying her great-grandson.

Ms. Vaughn is survived by her son, John E. Parker, and his wife, Sandy, of Eagle River; brothers, Waitus Denham of Des Allemands, La., John Denham and Percy Denham of Sumrall, Miss.; three grandchildren, Amanda Parker, Brent Parker and Brian Parker; and one great-grandchild, Parker Young.

She was preceded in death by her son, William Parker.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Mary Conrad Center, 9100 Centennial Drive, Anchorage 99504.

Arrangements were with Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

FORMER RESIDENT

Delmar Zentmire, 86

Former Seward resident Delmar R. Zentmire, 86, died March 23, 2004, in Cottonwood, Ariz.

Mr. Zentmire was born Feb. 24, 1918, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Vina and Virgil Zentmire.

He came to Alaska in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946.

Mr. Zentmire worked in the shipping industry in Seward for 25 years. Most recently, he spent 10 years with the Seward Water Department as superintendent. He retired in 1976 and left Alaska in 1977.

He was past commander of the Seward Veterans of Foreign Wars and past exalted ruler of the Elks Club of Seward. He also was a member of the Seward Chamber of Commerce and had served on the Seward City Council.

Mr. Zentmire is survived by his wife, Richie Zentmire; sons, Jerry Zentmire and Greg Giardina; daughters, Roberta Mackey and Eleanor Brown; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Zentmire was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Zentmire.

Dennis Saathoff, 65

Anchorage resident Dennis Saathoff, 65, died of natural causes March 27, 2004, at his home.

Mr. Saathoff was born July 3, 1938, to John and Beatta Saathoff in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He graduated from St. Charles High School on May 30, 1956. He later joined the Army, which brought him to Palmer. He was honorably discharged Feb. 21, 1961. Mr. Saathoff was employed by Anchorage Water and Wastewater until his retirement.

In Anchorage he met Karen Julia Seifert and they were married in Faith Lutheran Church on March 30, 1974. They continued to attend Faith Lutheran until their deaths.

Dennis was preceded in death by his wife in 2002.

"Karen was his wife, his best friend and his soul mate," his family wrote. "They were married for 28 years before Karen passed on.

"Dennis loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His family loved and respected him and will continue to cherish him. He loved working in his gardens, and watching his plants, flowers and vegetables grow. He enjoyed doing for others and was a generous, attentive and dedicated friend. He was loved by all who knew him. He was charitable to those less fortunate than himself."

Mr. Saathoff is survived by his mother, Beatta Saathoff of Minnesota; children and their spouses, Kent and Tamara Saathoff of Wasilla, Denise and Jay Friesen of Missoula, Mont., and Aaron Saathoff of Anchorage; grandchildren, Melissa Wallace and spouse Sonny of Oregon, and Dakota, Jasmine and Bree Friesen of Missoula; great-grandchildren, Summer, Sean and Natalie Wallace of Oregon; brother and sister-in-law, Ted Saathoff and Eileen; sisters and brothers-in-law, Chris and Chuck Grui, Margaret and Bill Heim, and Susan and Tom Kyser; and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are with Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
