The Violet Richardson Awards were presented Feb. 4 during a combined meeting of Soroptimist International of Anchorage and Soroptimist International of Cook Inlet. The annual awards are given to youth volunteers for community service. Natalie Beach, a senior at Colony High School in Palmer, received the Anchorage club award. Ophelia Yen, a senior at Dimond High School, received the Cook Inlet club award. Each included a $1,000 award and a $500 contribution to their volunteer project. Natalie received recognition for her work at Ron Larson Elementary School, where she helps young readers in two or three classrooms. Ophelia was recognized for her years of volunteer work at the Mountain View Boys and Girls Club and the Mountain View Recreation Center, where she is a mentor for children and adolescents. Ophelia plans to use the funds she received to help sponsor National Youth Services Day projects in April in Anchorage.
