Washington, D.C. (June 22, 2003) – Freedom midfielder Mia Hamm scored a goal and added an assist on Sunday afternoon vs. the San Jose CyberRays at RFK Stadium, but former Freedom forward Pretinha scored two goals of her own to deadlock San Jose and Washington, 2-2. With her three-point performance, Hamm has 20 points on the year and is tied for the league-lead in scoring in 2003.

The game’s scoring began in the 32nd minute, when San Jose forward Pretinha intercepted a ball Abby Wambach attempted to play back to the Freedom midfield from near the centerline. Pretinha took the errant pass, drove through the Freedom backline, and beat charging Freedom goalkeeper Mullinix in a one-on-one breakaway situation. The Freedom countered in the 35th minute, when Freedom forward Jacqui Little sent a ball into Mia Hamm inside the upper left corner of the San Jose 18-yard box. Hamm took the pass and fired at CyberRay goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene, which Beene dove at and deflected to the left. Hamm collected the deflected ball and promptly scored the equalizer on the open San Jose net for a 1-1 score.

The first half scoring ended in the 44th minute, when Mia Hamm sent a ball in from the right flank into the San Jose penalty area, which Freedom forward Jacqui Little stopped near the penalty kick marker. Freedom forward Abby Wambach spun around and hit the dead ball past Beene to take the lead, 2-1.

The second half’s scoring started and ended in the 48th minute off a restart for San Jose. Former Freedom defender Amanda Cromwell sent a free kick in towards the top of the Freedom’s 18-yard box, which San Jose midfielder Brandi Chastain headed to the Freedom’s 6-yard box, where Brazilian Pretinha was waiting. Pretinha took Chastain’s header and redirected with a header of her own far-post past Mullinix for the equalizer, 2-2.

SJC – Pretinha (unassisted) 32

WAS – Mia Hamm (unassisted) 35
