Uniondale, NY - Two goals by rookie Christie Welsh propelled the Power (5-5-1) to a 3-1 win over the visiting San Jose CyberRays (4-6-0) on a rain soaked Mitchel Athletic Complex field. With the win, the Power moved into a three-way tie with the Washington Freedom and Atlanta Beat for second place, while the San Jose CyberRays dropped to sixth place. Emily Janss scored the other Power goal, while rookie Katie Antongiovanni tallied her first WUSA goal for San Jose.

For the first part of the game, the teams tried to get used to the slick field, as players were sliding all over. Janss was able to get the Power on the scoreboard first, tallying in the 21st minute. Anita Rapp collected a loose ball in the middle of the field and played the ball to the left flank to Margaret Tietjen. Tietjen took a few touches and played a beautiful cross into the CyberRays box to a streaking Janss. Janss volleyed the ball past a helpless Dawn Greathouse for her second goal of the season. The teams would end up going to halftime, with the Power leading, 1-0.

Welsh added to the Power's lead in the 73rd minute. Tammy Pearman played a ball through the midfield to Welsh. Welsh went one-on-one with defender Kelly Lindsey. Welsh faked a right-footed shot, which Lindsey went to block, and cut the ball back to her left foot. She unleased a left-footed shot from 14-yards out beating Greathouse to her right.

The CyberRays would cut the deficit in half in the 84th minute. San Jose's Antongiovanni took a long pass from Pretinha, and slide her shot past a diving Saskia Webber. The goal by San Jose ended Webber's shutout streak at 275 minutes, a new Power record. Gao Hong held the old mark of 222 shutout minutes.

The Power would seal the win in stoppage time, with Welsh's second goal of the game. Cheryl Salisbury, headed clear a San Jose cross to Shannon Boxx, who raced 35-yards through the midfield and played a ball to the right flank. Welsh outran the San Jose defense to the ball and again went in alone on Greathouse. With the San Jose goalkeeper trying to cut off the angle, Welsh was able to find the back of the net with a right-footed shot.

The game was very physical, with 34 fouls being whistled and three yellow cards issued.

The Power were without forward Tiffeny Milbrett (U.S. National Team Duty), defender Christie Pearce (U.S. National Team Duty) and midfielder Krista Davey (right sprained ankle), while the CyberRays were without defender Brandi Chastain (U.S. National Team Duty), defender Thori Bryan (U.S. National Team Duty), goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene (U.S. National Team Duty) and midfielder Sissi (bruised and separated rib).

The Power will next head to San Diego to take on the Spirit on Saturday, June 21. The CyberRays will head to Washington for a June 22 meeting with the Freedom.

Quotes:

Power Head Coach Tom Sermanni - "The way we actually got stronger as the game went on tonight are things that I give huge credit to the players."

"We said before the game began that the conditions will dictate the game and our main emphasis, particularly in the midfield area, that there was no point taking more than one or two touches and that the ball just had to be dropped in behind the back line." (of the San Jose defense)

"I think we were a bit fortunate to be in at halftime up 1-0...and ultimately I thought we did better in the second half than the first."

"She (Saskia Webber) has been the consummate professional since this season started. The way she looked when she was training and the energy she was showing she just looked back to the way that people told me Saskia Webber used to be and I think the last three games she has shown that."

"We knew this was going to be a battle and whichever team fought the hardest and found ways to slip one in was going to win."

"We knew that the field wasn't going to be in very good shape with this amount of rain or not, so we kind of planned for that and we just didn't execute."

Power Goalkeeper Saskia Webber - "I knew when we broke the record. So then I relaxed a bit because I felt a lot of pressure, because I was told at practice. I didn't tell the team, so they didn't know, but I knew."

"After I had the record, I just tried to get the shutout for the game. I told the defense, its definitely a good feeling that you can be mad at yourself for not getting the shutout, because you are winning the game. Its a good thing to be upset about."

"I think we showed great character that when the score was 2-1 and we were under a lot of pressure, we could score that third goal to put the game away."

Power midfielder Emily Janss - "I had so many chances early on in certain games and it just wasn't happening, so I think that first goal out in San Jose last week was just a huge relief off my shoulders. To get this one just reaffirms that I can do this, I'm still in there and putting goals in the back of the net and doing things to help the team."

San Jose Head Coach Ian Sawyers - "I thought we should have put the game away in the first half. I thought we had three or four real good chances where we could have put the game away. They had a couple of chances and put one away, but we should have buried at least two of our four chances on the first half."

San Jose's Amanda Cromwell - "We're just having problems scoring goals right now and there's no reason we shouldn't have had more than one goal, but this is one of those games that we had to take a risk at the end of the game because we were down 2-1."
