Wikipedia:Requested pictures
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Have an article that needs a picture? Add it to the list!
Wikipedia can only accept photographs and pictures that are public domain, or that can be copyrighted compatibly with the GNU Free Documentation License. The simplest way to ensure that our pictures aren't going to get the project sued is to make them ourselves and explicitly PD or GFDL them... since there are Wikipedians all over the world, there's a decent chance that someone with a camera can get access to many places and objects.
Before posting please check the public domain image resources and the more general public domain resources. If you want to contribute an image you have taken yourself either on film or with a digital camera, please make sure it looks optimal. Consider using graphics software such as the GIMP to enhance saturation, contrast, and sharpness (sample tutorial). If the filesize of the finished image is above 100 kB it is a good idea to provide a thumbnail image as well. Please see Wikipedia:Image use policy for more advice on working with images.
If you're asking someone else to GFDL their image, see Request for Permission.
The following articles have had pictures requested; if you have such a picture, please upload it, add it to the article, remove it from the list, then show the world your good deed at: Wikipedia:Fulfilled picture requests.

Anatomy
For many of things in anatomy, it'd be good to have a reasonably hi-res picture, that labels and that could be added to, then this would be shrunk, saved and uploaded.
- Foot, photo of both left and right sides, showing some ankle. leave a message:Tristanb
- Breastfeeding should have a photo of a mother nursing her child. The picture in infant should show a breastfeeding mother, not a bottle-feeding one.
- Cowgirl sex position. One wiki-kiss to anyone who uploads it :) Martin 22:05 17 Jun 2003 (UTC)
- Lips (plain) and with clear Lipgloss, colored lipgloss, and glitter lipgloss and, of course, Lipstick (Standard Bright Red & Black preferably, also some for people of color) - ~ender 2003-08-31 01:13:MST
- An anonymous user posted this content (HELP ME FIND PICTURES ABOUT THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM.) to Ovarian follicle. I'm assuming it should be posted here. :) Jwrosenzweig 22:22, 11 Sep 2003 (UTC)
- I have tried now for a while but cannot get permission to use a drawing of the inner workings of the heart. The ones from Gray's Anatomy are not clear enough. An excellent one is at http://www.tmc.edu/thi/anatomy2.html . Any artists here who could produce a similar drawing? AxelBoldt 12:27, 20 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Architecture
- Diagrams showing items of Classical orders, such as architrave, frieze, cornice, Ionic order, etc. Libraries with older books should have public domain vintage books with good engravings of such.
- Wattle and daub (ideally both European and pre-Columbian American)
- Thatch (ditto)
- both of the above for not-yet-existent articles
- And why not Adobe, for that matter? And maybe Brick making? RickK 01:14, 19 Oct 2003 (UTC)
Artwork
Biology
Any article on an animal or plant would be improved by a picture, and there's no point in listing them all. It might be helpful to list here species that people are quite likely to have as pets/garden plants so might have pictures of handy.
Computers
- Apple I, Apple II family, iMac, iBook, PowerBook computers
- Microcomputer and Minicomputer - some generic examples
- Personal computer in serious need of a photo not taken in the dark
- Laptop could use a general example, as could laptop models which have articles; photos on ThinkPad are possibly copyrighted. Dell Inspiron is a stub and needs a photo.
- fuzzy control system - ASCII art needs to become proper diagrams. Martin 20:54, 18 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Games
Board Games
Many have good diagrams but may benefit from a photo of an actual game board
- Alquerque needs photos of empty/set-up boards
- Chess could use a clearer photograph
- Pictures of Chess pieces
- Checkers needs a photo of a real gameboard
- Chinese Checkers has great diagrams but could use a real photo
- Gomoku
Video game consoles
All video game consoles could use a photo. Preferably known-GPL ones taken by Wikipedians, rather than publicity photos of questionable legality (such as we currently have on Xbox or Nintendo 64). If you own one of these consoles, please help out!

Documents and artifacts
- Egyptian language -- examples of writing in hieroglyphic and demotic scripts
- Voting system, First-past-the-post electoral system, Instant-runoff voting, Party-list proportional representation, election etc. -- real-world examples of ballots or example ballots for elections using different voting systems.
- The Liberty Bell which is in Philadelphia. I'd like to see its image in that article and in the American Revolution, thanks!
- A picture of the Behistun Inscription
Maps
- A line map (b/w) of the North America showing state borders/province (thin lines) and country borders (thicker lines) that can be shaded in to create range maps for various species. A huge map that also showed county borders, rivers and large lakes would be even better, but that's asking too much. email obik@dementlieu.com or post on the Cottonmouth talk page.
Miscellaneous
- Emission and absorption spectrograms for each chemical element
- A picture of the Davy Crockett nuclear missile. See here for sample pics: http://www.guntruck.com/DavyCrockett.html
- A band or crowd scene or something from Lollapalooza
- A picture of a Messerschmitt Me 262 that we actually have permission to use. There is an Me262 at the US Air Force Museum at Dayton, Ohio, and they may have better photographs which we can use. We can't take them off the website, as the copyright status of the (mediocre) image that they have is unclear. To get a photo, somebody needs to visit the museum and take a photo. To find out about good-quality photos, somebody (and it would make it easier if it was a US citizen) needs to send them a snail-mail letter about the subject. Of course, if somebody can get a photo of one at some other location, that's fine too.
- A bluescreen setup. With the film camera and an actor visible would be great. CGS 09:03, 11 Aug 2003 (UTC).
- POV-Ray could use a nice rendering done in the software to show what it's capable of (preferably an existing public-domain scene or GPLed Wikipedian creation)
- All kinds of knots. Some already have excellent photographs, such as bowline, but there are more than 300 knots listed, most of which have no photos. The more complex ones would benefit by step-by-step diagrams like you see in Boy Scout handbooks.
- A picture for Crushing by elephant. --snoyes 02:37, 28 Nov 2003 (UTC)
- A picture of a V1 Flying Bomb. --snoyes 04:31, 28 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Everyday objects
Lots of common everyday objects could use a photograph, for the benefit of alien anthropologists elsewhere in the universe. Some which have already been supplied include eyeglasses, scissors, cooking pan, calculator, floppy disk and the like. These are probably some of the most easily overlooked things, since many of us see them every day and don't really think to photograph them. Others still needed:
- screw - different types of screws, especially. Wood screws, sheet metal screws, cap screw, drywall screw, etc.
- nail - same as above
- All kinds of batteries, including Lead-acid battery, rechargeable battery, etc.
- LEGO has one picture, but sorely needs more. Photos of LEGOLAND attractions would be good, too, once we have an article on it (see Talk:LEGO)
- Added a second picture now. Andre Engels 15:38, 10 Oct 2003 (UTC)
- paper, cardboard, papyrus. Photos, perhaps diagrams of how they're made, etc.
- cloth, including wool, felt, polyester, rayon, and others. Some super-close-up photos or maybe even diagrams showing the weave and texture would be great.
- Palette knife -- Samw 18:10, 14 Aug 2003 (UTC)
Music
- the old-fashioned Bass clef (the one that curls anticlockwise), ideally in a size & format to match the existing two clef pictures
- Most of the musical instruments, including the bassoon, double bass, euphonium, sitar, timpani, xylophone
Organisms
- Hominid needs a better picture of a Hominid (Gorilla is the same as in Gorilla)
- Monera -- needs a micrograph of a bacteria
- Frog could really use a life-cycle diagram from someone artistic. Alternatively, photos of frogspawn and tadpoles with or without legs
- Cat breeds - all breeds needed.
- Dog preferably side view/portrait.
- Zeehorse
- Zebronkey
- Pluot
- Paper wasp for the article with the overly long name at How to tell a honeybee from a wasp, hornet, etc., in addition to its individual article page
- Sperm Whale has a photo, but a good underwater photo of the whole whale would be ideal. Or maybe a beautiful backflip photo like there is on Whale.
- Cosmos (flower) (see Talk re "Hyperflower" logo)
People
- Paul Erdös
- Dick Gephardt
- Billy Graham
- Bob Graham
- Ernest Hemingway
- Alfred Hitchcock (and no, a picture of his statue at Mme Tussauds doesn't count)
