Peter Bailey, 60; 'Gator' Gosnell, 76; Mary M. Huddleston, 86; Donavon Fugate, 43; Raymond Wooksuk Seetomona, 66; Stella Elmira Vogus, 79


Peter Bailey, 60

Anchorage resident Peter George Bailey, 60, died Sept. 26, 2003, at Providence Alaska Medical Center of a heart attack.

A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Anchorage Funeral Home, 1800 Dare Ave. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 616 W. 10th Ave., with the Rev. Keith Lauwers officiating.

Mr. Bailey was born June 30, 1943, in Dayton, Ohio. He earned a bachelor's degree from Westmont College and a bachelor's degree in music from University of the Pacific. He came to Alaska in August 1972, residing in Kodiak until 1991.

Mr. Bailey was a career piano tuner and computer systems administrator. He retired from Tesoro in July 2002. He received an award from Habitat for Humanity and was a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Bailey's interests included ham radio. He also was a musician and founded the Kodiak Balalaika Players.

His family wrote: "Peter loved to teach. He loved to learn. He had a passionate love for music. He expressed that love through the exploration and mastery of many instruments. He inspired the love of music in others. He was a very special person and will be missed.''

Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his father, George Bailey; mother, Dorothy Bailey; and brother, Frank Bailey.

He is survived by his sons, Frank Bailey and Stephen Bailey of Anchorage and David Bailey of Bellingham, Wash.; daughter, Bonnie Callahan of Anchorage; grandsons, Daniel and William Callahan of Anchorage; granddaughter, Kaia Bailey of Anchorage; brother, Philip Bailey of Wilmington, Calif.; and spouse of 34 years, Diedre Bailey of Anchorage.

Arrangements were by Anchorage Funeral Home and Crematory.

'Gator' Gosnell, 76

Longtime Alaskan and business owner Dwight George Gosnell, best known as "Gator" of Gator Glass, died of cancer Sept. 27, 2003, surrounded by family members and friends in his Wasilla home.

A service will be at 11 a.m. today, with a visitation at 10 a.m., at Anchorage Baptist Temple. A service was held Tuesday in Wasilla. A third service will be Friday at Henry-Cochran Funeral Home in Blue Ridge, Ga. Interment will be at the Friendship Baptist Church No. 3 Cemetery in Blue Ridge.

Mary M. Huddleston, 86

Longtime Alaskan Mary M. Huddleston, 86, died peacefully Sept. 26, 2003, at her home in Copper Center.

A visitation will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St. A funeral will be at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Garry Cappleman, O.P., officiating. A graveside service will follow at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Huddleston was born Sept. 28, 1916, in Winona, Minn., to John and Marye Tomashek, the sixth of seven children. She was a small child when her parents died and was then raised in an orphanage. At the age of 16, she left to live with her sister, Rose, and brother-in-law. In 1933, she married Neil A. Huddleston in Wabasha, Minn. In 1949 they moved with their children to Alaska, first residing in Fairbanks, then settling in Copper Center in 1950.

Mrs. Huddleston and her husband briefly owned and operated the Riverside Station and adjacent café, where she and Rose turned out many an excellent meal. After the death of her husband in 1973, Mrs. Huddleston went to live with her daughter and son-in-law and their children in Anchorage. In 1980, they moved permanently to Copper Center, which Mrs. Huddleston had always considered home.

Her family wrote: "Gram loved to crochet and made many beautiful rugs and afghans for family and friends. She was a wonderful cook, especially at baking. Her homemade cinnamon rolls were a family favorite. Gram also made the best smoked salmon and freely shared the recipe with many people over the years. A devoted mother, grandmother and friend, she showed unwavering loyalty to those she loved. She was always optimistic, making the most of what she had, even when she had very little. Gram was very loving, kind-hearted and generous, thinking of others before herself, and had both an easygoing nature and a great sense of humor. We will miss her very much."

Mrs. Huddleston was preceded in death by all of her siblings; husband, Neil; son, Neil Jr.; grandchildren, John and Sally Huddleston and Mark Harnden.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William and Cec Huddleston of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Robert Schilling of Copper Center; daughter-in-law, Sandra Huddleston of Parker, Ariz.; and many grandchildren and friends.

Donations in her honor may be made to Crossroads Visiting Nurse Program, P.O. Box 5, Glennallen 99588.

Arrangements were made with Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St.

Donavon Fugate, 43

Kenai resident Donavon C. Fugate, 43, died Sept. 26, 2003, at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Peninsula Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Alan Humphries will officiate.

Mr. Fugate was born June 16, 1960, in Eureka, Calif., to Woodrow and Vivian Fugate. The family relocated to Calamith, Calif., and then to Roseburg, Ore., where they worked as loggers. In 1987, he moved to North Kenai to be with his longtime friends, Lowell Green and John Kernan. He hunted, fished and settled in, making Alaska his home.

His family wrote: "Although hampered by a setback at birth, Mr. Fugate never let it handicap his gentle, kind, forgiving and loving spirit. Generosity and thoughtfulness were the creed for this 'care full' and gentle man. Always quick with a 'please' and heartfelt 'thank you,' Donavon's memory will remain forever with all who called him friend, brother or mate.

"He loved people. He was recognized for his friendly, outgoing demeanor. Throughout our lives together he was such a beautiful, strong spirit. He was always there to lend a helping hand. He loved his grandchildren and would say, 'Love you, want you, miss you.' Now he will be greatly missed. Farewell to a beloved grandpa, companion, love and friend."

Mr. Fugate was preceded in death by his brothers, Doug Fugate and Danny Soloman.

He is survived by his longtime companion, Marianne Neucklavok; grandchildren, Jaquelyn, Marianne, Ralph and Cameron Ketah; and brothers, Dorwin "Doby" Dewayne, Clyde, Delbert and Darryl Fugate; sisters, Dorinda Grubbs and Darla Van Orman; and many friends who were like family to him.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.

Raymond Wooksuk Seetomona, 66

Anchorage resident Raymond Wooksuk Seetomona, 66, died Sept. 28, 2003, at Providence Alaska Medical Center.

A visitation will be at 11 a.m., with a funeral at noon Saturday at Central Lutheran Church. The Revs. George and Karen Sonray of Alaska Native Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be afterward at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Seetomona was born June 25, 1937, in Shishmaref.

Mr. Seetomona had attended college and became an electronics technician. While serving in the U.S. Army from 1962 until 1965, he lived in Germany. After military service, he lived in many places in Vietnam from 1965 until 1975, working for Page Communication.

In Alaska, he was employed by Alyeska Pipeline from 1987 until his retirement in 2001.

He was raised and baptized a Lutheran.

Mr. Seetomona enjoyed reading, fishing, repair and troubleshooting of anything electronic, and watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His family wrote: "Raymond gave generously to his family and friends. He gave to the homeless people in the community and helped a children's orphanage in Vietnam. Ray was a kind and generous man who had a big heart. He was always there for us and gave his love to all."

Survivors include his wife, Linda Seetomona; mother, Glenna Seetomona; children and spouses, Terry and Dennelle Seetomona, David and Marcela Seetomona, Thuha and Susumu Nakasone, Joanne and Curtis Yim, Mimi and Edgar Tinajero; brothers and sisters-in-law, Elmer and Mary Avessuk, Steve and Loretta Seetomona, Coolidge Seetomona and Charlie Seetomona; sisters and brother-in-law, Lorena Seetomona, Marilyn Seetomona and Harriet and Everett Cutshall; sisters-in-law, Viola Seetomona and He Nguyen; brother-in-law, Cao Nguyen; uncle, Roderick Seetomona; aunts, Willa Seetomona and Lola Avessuk; nephews, Joe Seetomona, Shawn Seetomona, Thomas Seetomona, Raymond Valois, Stephen Cutshall, Douglas McNeil, Christopher Seetomona and wife Jamie; nieces, Sheila Randazzo and husband Brian, Arlene Seetomona, Satina McNeil, Aimee Cutshall, Jennifer and Katherine Seetomona, Rhonda and James Curtain, Cookie Hope; grandchildren, Michael Yim, Hajime Nakasone, Rachael Nakasone, Brian Yim, Edgar Tinajero, Amanda Tinajero, Raymond Yim, Joshua Tinajero, Andres Yim, Simon Seetomona, Siri Seetomona; and great-grandchildren, Ryu Bruce and Hana Nakasone.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements were with Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

Stella Elmira Vogus, 79

Chugiak resident Stella Elmira Vogus, 79, died Sept. 26, 2003, at Providence Extended Care Facility.

A private celebration of life by her family is planned.

Mrs. Vogus was born Feb. 29, 1924, in Franklin, Pa. She moved to Alaska in 1969 and lived in Anchorage until 1974, in Willow from 1974 to 1995 and in Chugiak from 1995 to 2003. She was employed by J.C. Penney Co. from 1969 until retirement in 1973.

Mrs. Vogus was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Talkeetna before leaving the Willow area to live at the assisted living facility in Chugiak. She also was a member of the Upper Susitna Seniors and She-Mon-Sun Homemakers Club in Willow and was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars #3836 in Talkeetna.

Mrs. Vogus enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, reading, camping and fishing.

Her family wrote: "She loved the adventure of life in rural Alaska. Her most joyous moments in life were spent with her husband, children and the rest of her large family cooking big meals."

Mrs. Vogus is survived by her spouse of 63 years, Everett Vogus; children, Carole Young, James Vogus, Linda Gregor, Nancy Johnson, Michael Vogus and Tim Vogus; grandchildren, Crystal Domino, Rob and Sandra White, Shelli Wanamaker, Eric Vogus, Julie Richards, Wendy Mancuso, Donald Gregor, Tonya Durham, Kevin and Kara Johnson, and Matthew, Rashelle, Braun and David Vogus; 21 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; and brother, Bill Stroup of Denver.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Her ashes will be scattered in the Talkeetna Mountains.

Arrangements are with Witz-leben Family Funeral Homes.
