37,000 Troops, 2 Carriers Heading to Gulf
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Army is sending its most modern combat division to the Persian Gulf region and the Navy is dispatching two aircraft carriers to join two others already within striking distance of Iraq, officials said Tuesday. The Army's 4th Infantry Division, equipped with tanks, attack helicopters and artillery to defeat armored forces, is heading a group of 37,000 soldiers ordered to reposition in the Persian Gulf region. Their equipment will be shipped first, with the soldiers to go when final basing arrangements are worked out, officials said.

Kuwait Ambush Kills 1 American, Wounds 1
KUWAIT CITY (AP) - At least one gunman opened fire on an SUV carrying two American civilians near a U.S. military camp Tuesday, killing one and wounding the other in what the U.S. Embassy called a terrorist attack. The men, contractors working for the U.S. military, were the first civilians to come under fire in recent attacks on Americans in Kuwait.

Bush Warns Against Inaction on Iraq
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush expressed frustration Tuesday with allies reluctant to wage war against Iraq, saying Saddam Hussein has been given "ample time" to disarm and pledging anew to bind with like-minded world leaders to confront Baghdad. "This business about more time, how much time do we need to see clearly that he's not disarming?" Bush told reporters after meeting with economists to tout his $670 billion tax-cutting plan.

North Korean Delegation Arrives in Seoul
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - In an apparent swipe at the United States, a North Korean delegation arriving for talks in South Korea said Tuesday that the two sides should resist "outside pressure" amid concerns over the North's nuclear weapons development. The four-day talks are supposed to promote North-South projects such as a planned cross-border railway, but the South Korean government has pledged to use them to urge its neighbor to give up its nuclear programs.

Judge Files Order Against Microsoft
BALTIMORE (AP) - A federal judge formally issued an order Tuesday requiring Microsoft Corp. to release an updated version of Sun Microsystems' Java programming language for Windows. U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz, who decided in December to issue an injunction against Microsoft, delayed the order's effective date for two weeks so Microsoft can appeal.

Israeli Forces Demolish Palestinian Shops
NABLUS, West Bank (AP) - In the biggest demolition in the West Bank in years, Israel razed 62 shops and market stalls in a Palestinian village Tuesday as troops clashed with protesters, residents said. Israel says the shops were built illegally. The mayor of the village accused Israel of waging war on the Palestinian economy.

Dow Drops 38, Nasdaq Nearly Unchanged
NEW YORK (AP) - Wall Street cautiously sifted through more earnings reports Tuesday, with investors bidding most stocks lower despite healthy profits at such companies as 3M and Ford. In morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 37.99, or 0.4 percent, at 8,548.51, after gaining as much as 36.75 earlier. The Dow was adding to last week's 2.3 percent loss, which came amid cautious outlooks from companies including Intel and IBM.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Venus Williams slammed sizzling aces. Andre Agassi executed precision serves. Both advanced to the Australian Open semifinals Tuesday as Williams moved one match closer to another showdown with sister Serena, and Agassi neared a fourth title in this Grand Slam event.
