Bush Says 'The Game Is Over' for Saddam
WASHINGTON (AP) - Signaling that war with Iraq is approaching, President Bush says "the game is over" for Saddam Hussein and the United Nations should not permit itself to be "mocked by a dictator." But France, which is holding out for extended U.N. weapons inspections in Iraq and clings to hope for a diplomatic settlement, resisted Bush's call for a new U.N. resolution to reinforce demands that Saddam get rid of weapons of mass destruction.

Blix Says Iraq Seems to Be Making Effort
VIENNA, Austria (AP) - An Iraqi scientist's decision to be interviewed by U.N. inspectors suggests that Baghdad is "making an effort" to cooperate, chief U.N. inspector Hans Blix said Friday ahead of a key visit to Iraq. Asked about Thursday's interview with an Iraqi biologist, Blix said: "I think it seems as they are making an effort." But he added: "We want to see a lot more this weekend," when he and head nuclear inspector Mohamed ElBaradei meet with senior Iraqi officials.

SPACE CENTER, Houston (AP) - An independent board named by NASA took the lead of the Columbia investigation, while officials at the space agency stressed that they were keeping an open mind about what might have caused the shuttle to break apart over Texas. "We have not ruled out any possible cause," shuttle program manager Ron Dittemore said Thursday, hours after an independent investigation board arrived at the Johnson Space Center to start its work.

In the East, a storm system slid across the Southeast and up the Atlantic Coast, with snow building toward the Northeast. Snowfall in New York City was expected to range from 4-8 inches. A broad area of snow showers was expected to gradually begin to taper off from west to east over the morning hours across the Midwest, Ohio and Tennessee River Valley, leaving 1-3 inches, with local amounts up to 6 inches.

Democrats Criticizing Bush on N. Korea
WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrats said Thursday that President Bush, in a push for war against Iraq, is ignoring a potentially greater danger in North Korea's rapidly advancing nuclear program. The White House, however, said it is has "robust plans for any contingencies" involving North Korea. Secretary of State Colin Powell repeated that the United States has no plans to attack North Korea, but that Bush "has retained all his options."

Uncertainties Slow Smallpox Vaccinations
WASHINGTON (AP) - Two weeks into a national vaccination program that was expected to take a month, smallpox vaccinations have begun in just 16 states. A top federal official acknowledged Thursday that the program was off to a slow start, citing the unresolved issue of compensation for people harmed by the vaccine as well as confusion about the risk of a bioterrorism attack.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - Hamas, a militant group that espouses suicide attacks and a strict Islamic rule, says it is ready to take over the Palestinian leadership from Yasser Arafat. The statements on Thursday by a senior Hamas official, Mahmoud Zahar, were a rare public expression of the rising political ambitions of the group as Israel works to weaken Arafat.
