City Administration
The adornment of our city is the building of City Hall,
built in 1902 on the project of architects
M. Ellady and A. Bernardazzi.
This is an L-shaped building with the slightly prominent corner entrance, marked with a
clock tower accomplished in the style of Venetian Gothic.
From this very place the chimes are heard in the Kishinev centre every hour. They resound
the call-sign of the Republic of Moldova.
The phrase “My own city, you are a flower of stone…” (the music by E. Doga) became
the call-sign of the republic. For Kishinev dwellers City Hall symbolizes time.
The local administration in the city is carried out through the representative authority -
the City Council, and the executive power – City Hall headed by the Mayor.
City Hall was created in 1817. Angel Nour was elected the first Mayor. The institute of
mayor had been existing until 1941.
In 1990 it was reestablished in the Republic. The first mayor was N. Kostin.
Now the Mayor of Kishinev is Serafim
Urecheanu.
The direction of City Hall,
headed by Serafim Urecheanu from 1993, settles numerous tasks, our society, being in
transition to the market economy, faced with. Not policy, but the problems of the ordinary
toiler and businessman, doctor and teacher, pensioner and teenager are at the centre of
the attention of the Kishinev Mayor, who “sincerely believes that our city is pleasing
to God. This is the city that has found the new way of its development, where the native
majority lives in peace and consent with many other ethnic minorities, the city, open to
the world and future”.
