The book

A sixteenth-century woodcut doesn't do full justice to chancery italic. Never mind; this is close enough.

Every page of La Operina is a model sheet, ready for copying. But there’s more to Arrighi’s method than beautiful writing alone.
Some of his lettershapes are also ways of coping with a quill pen. Oblique entry strokes and bulb terminals kept the ink flowing. We don't really need them anymore: ballpoints and fountain pens are fairly dependable. The old approach is worth learning nonetheless. It lends grace, even a touch of extravagance, to a beautiful hand.
I'd like to show you how. But first I should mention your pen.
