Arrighi’s based most of his lower-case letters on a few simple shapes. Here’s the letter a, step by step. (See the book, pages 6 and 7.)





Start with a rectangle. Make it about a third higher than it's wide. Give it a slight tilt, seven or eight degrees. And keep the thing firmly in mind as you write. There are exceptions; here's one.

Arrighi used the same triangle for the letters a and c. People like the letter c with less slant nowadays. Base it on the letter o instead.
