COLOMBIA: TIME TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

Colombia's new President, Álvaro Uribe Vélez, must not ignore his responsibility to make the human rights of all Colombians a priority. Amnesty International has expressed serious concern at a recent statement made in Congress by the Minister of the Interior to the effect that the Ministry's Office for Human Rights "should not exist". Colombia's worsening internal armed conflict affects virtually every part of the country and has taken the lives of more than 60,000 people since 1985 - currently around 20 people every day.

DEFEND THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT

In recent months, the US has been approaching governments asking them to agree not to surrender US nationals accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes to the new International Criminal Court. In many cases, the US government is threatening to withdraw military assistance from countries that will not agree. Amnesty International has launched a worldwide petition in response. Take Action Now! Please sign by 27 September.

ZIMBABWE: POLITICAL VIOLENCE INTENSIFIES AHEAD OF SEPTEMBER LOCAL ELECTIONS

In the run-up to local council elections in September, Amnesty International is deeply concerned that the pattern of using violence against the political opposition and abusing the neutrality of the police by government and state-sponsored 'militia' will be repeated.

Amnesty International strongly condemns state-sponsored violence, torture, arrests and intimidation of opposition candidates and supporters during country-wide local council elections held on 28 and 29 September.

Malaysia: Government passes up opportunity to right grave injustice
2 October, 2002
Amnesty International expressed its dismay at Home Minister Abdullah Badawi's statement, that five government critics detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) would not be freed, despite an earlier Federal Court ruling that their initial detention was unlawful. The ISA provides for indefinite detention without charge or trial.

EU compromise on US impunity agreements a setback for world court

Amnesty International reacted with deep concern to today's compromise decision by European Union foreign ministers on the International Criminal Court.

Israel/Occupied Territories: New report reveals killing of children increasing

Children are increasingly becoming the victims of killings in Israel and the Occupied Territories, Amnesty International said today, as it released a new report showing the death toll during the present intifada.

Update on Saudi Arabia
Since the March 2000 launch by Amnesty International of the first-ever campaign on Saudi Arabia by an international human rights organisation, the Saudi Arabian government has announced a number of positive developments. There has been a sustained debate in the UK media on human rights, Islam, and the way forward. Amnesty International continues to pursue a dialogue with the Saudi Arabian government.
