BRISK BOX OFFICE ACTIVITY FOR 53RD TATTOO
AS QUEEN CONFIRMS VISIT

Posted 31st January 2002

The forthcoming Edinburgh Tattoo (2-24 August), which will celebrate The Queen's Golden Jubilee, already appears to be bucking the national downward visitor trend experienced by many a hard hit tourism business if early ticket sales are anything to go by.

Figures released today by event organisers show that in spite of the disastrous effects of last year's foot and mouth outbreak followed by the terrorist atrocities of September 11th, Tattoo ticket sales are more than 15,000 seats up on January 2001. While this represents an increase of almost £400,000 in ticketing revenue compared with the same period last year, gross box office takings thus far currently stand at a heartening £1.5 million.

"The theme of this year's special Tattoo is The Queen's Golden Jubilee and advance ticket sales suggest there is huge interest in celebrating this great occasion," remarked Tattoo Chief Executive and Producer, Brigadier Melville Jameson.

"It is indeed an immense honour that Her Majesty will attend the Tattoo at the close of an extremely busy Jubilee programme on August 5th," he added.

But the timeless attraction of the Edinburgh Tattoo combined with 3 successive sell-out seasons are doubtless also having an effect on boosting sales for the upcoming summer spectacular, which has already seen 45% of the available 217,000 tickets being snapped up in record time.

Performers from all three services - the Army, the Navy, and the Royal Air Force - including the largest gathering of Pipes & Drums and Massed Military Bands from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth ever to grace the floodlit esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, will join forces to stage a stunning programme of music, colour and action at this August's especially colourful event.

Tickets for this eagerly anticipated production, priced £9.00 to £27.50, can be obtained by post from the Tattoo Ticket Office, 32-34 Market Street, Edinburgh EH1 1QB, by facsimile on 0131-225 8627 or via the internet at www.edintattoo.co.uk Telephone orders may be made on 08707 555 1188.
