Washington Freedom Updated: Tuesday August 14, 2001 12:03 PM
On paper, the Washington Freedom looked awesome, but they never found their rhythm as a team, finishing the season out of the playoffs at 6-12-3 with 21 points, the same as the Carolina Courage. They were solid in goal with Siri Mullinix, the No. 1 U.S. 'keeper, as well as the center of the midfield with Anne Makinen, Jen Grubb, Amanda Cromwell, Mia Hamm (when she played there). And on the flanks in midfield they had Bai Jie and Michelle French. The Freedom's biggest questions were in their defense. Upfront, Pretinha had been consistently dangerous, but she faded during the final third of the season. Her Brazilian teammate, Roseli, never lived up to her billing. Consistency was never there, as Hamm noted after the Freedom's final game.
"If you talk to any team out there, they never knew which Freedom team would come to play," she said. "The team that could take over a game and really put some fear into some teams. Or the team that lets in a goal in the last five minutes." |
