Beat to face Mexican national team Posted: Wednesday October 17, 2001 2:22 PMATLANTA -- The Atlanta Beat today announced it will play the Mexican Women's National Team in an exhibition match on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 4:00 p.m. at the University of Georgia's Women's Athletic Complex in Athens. The match will be the Beat's first-ever versus a full international squad and proceeds will benefit Sept. 11 disaster relief efforts. "The Mexican women's team is considered a real up and comer in the CONCACAF region with a core of quality players," said Beat Head Coach Tom Stone. "This match will be intense and one of the only chances to see the Beat play in the off season." Beat forward and captain Cindy Parlow has seen success in the past versus the Mexican Women's National Team. Parlow notched two goals in a 3-2 U.S. Women's National Team win over Mexico on Dec. 10, 2000 in Houston, the last time the U.S. faced Mexico. The Mexican Women's National Team features WUSA players Lisa Nanez of the Bay Area CyberRays and Monica Gerardo of the Washington Freedom. They most recently defeated the Canadian U-20 Women's National Team 1-0 and 7-0 in exhibition matches played on June 15 and 17, in Xalapa, Mexico. The match versus Mexico will be the Beat's first full-scale match since the WUSA Championship in Foxboro, Mass. on August 25. Tickets ($15 general admission bleacher seats and $10 standing room) go on sale to the general public Wednesday, Oct. 24 at noon. They can be purchased through any Ticketmaster outlet including Publix supermarkets and TicketMaster charge by phone (404/249-6400), by calling The Beat at 1-877-SOCCER-1 or visiting www.theatlantabeat.com. With a maximum venue capacity of 3000, the game is expected to sell out quickly. |
