Royals pitcher has fractured skull

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Royals pitcher Mike MacDougal has been discharged from a hospital after having his skull fractured by a flying bat. The rookie right-hander spent Thursday night in intensive care at Kansas City's St. Luke's Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman said MacDougal was discharged on Friday. MacDougal has a crack on the upper portion of his left temple, but the fracture did not appear to damage his brain, said Royals trainer Nick Swartz. The pitcher was alert when spoken to Friday, said the trainer, who was in Detroit for the team's series with the Tigers. "There were no fragments of bone, no depression of the skull into the brain," Swartz said. "They ran scans and there was no bleeding in the brain, so that's good." MacDougal, 24, was leaning on the dugout rail during Thursday night's game against the Cleveland Indians when Carlos Beltran lost the grip on his bat. After staying down several minutes as teammates hovered around him, the rookie right-hander got to his feet and slowly walked into the tunnel. "He was either in shock or on the verge of being unconscious," manager Tony Muser said. MacDougal has a 1-1 record and a 4.70 ERA in three starts this season.
