At WinHEC 2001 Bill Gates has announced the availability of the Windows XP beta 2. The tablet PC was also demonstrated, and heralds a new way of interacting with laptop style PCs. Gates also called on developers to begin adding server-like fault tolerance to PC platforms. |

Nenad Stefanovic has confirmed that the next version of WTL will support Visual Studio.NET. The current versions (3.0 and 3.1) will still work with ATL7, but you will need to define _ATL_TMP_IMPL2 and ignore some compiler warnings. |

The new V.92 dialup standard promises to speed up mdoem setup, and increase upload speed to 48Kbs. The standard will also allow modem users to put their connection on hold while they field incoming calls, and will reduce the initial handshaking period from up to 30 secs to around 10 secs. Connections will also be more robust through better handling of the call waiting beep used in many phone systems. |

Four flavors will be available: Whistler Personal, Whistler Professional, Whistler Server, and Whistler Advanced Server. The Personal version is aimed at the home/consumer market and will be a replacement for Windows 98, while the other three versions replace the Windows 2000 versions of the same name. |

Allegedly Microsoft has been advertising that Netscape was built with Visual C++/MFC - but it seems that so too was Internet Explorer, except that Microsoft has been mum on that point. I wonder where this leaves the 'future of MFC' debate... |

Apple's new operating system, MacOS X, will finally get features that Windows has had for years. The OS is based on Mach 3.0 and FreeBSD, has preemptive multitasking, protected memory, and looks very, very cool. It seems that Apple has stopped playing catchup and may give Windows 2000 a run for its money. |
