Apple lawyers attack MacOS 8.x skinning code
Posted by Neobond @ 04:45 PM CET
Comments(0)    Forums
Apple has demanded the open source Mac Themes Project remove its MacOS theme editor from public servers.

The Mac maker alleges the code contributes to infringement of its intellectual property by allowing users to improperly copy its trademarks and copyrights. In Apple's words, it "enables third parties to create themes that are identical or confusingly similar to Apple's copyrighted and trademarked themes".

Apple also claims the code may be "a derivative work resulting from unauthorised reverse engineering of Apple's software".

Microsoft Whistler Server and Adv Server Beta 2 Preview

Comments(0)    Forums
ActiveWin has posted a preview of Microsoft Codename "Whistler" Server and Advanced Server, including many screenshots.

Excerpt: "I am going to be writing a series on Windows Whistler/XP that will cover the Server and Client operating systems. This article will be the first in the series aimed as an Administrative overview of Windows XP Professional edition. In this article you will see the management improvements that XP will offer, not all of the pretty stuff that End Users find attractive. This article will be followed by a more extensive review of Whistler Server that will cover quasi-major differences over 2000. The last articles in the series will focus on End-User enhancements on the Personal edition and the Professional edition. Hopefully, after reading this article, you will be able to determine if Whistler/XP will be something that your company will want to move to."

WinXP: product activation, updates and control freakery
Posted by Neobond @ 02:53 PM CET
Comments(0)    Forums
The Register has posted a nice article where it digs deep on the whole concept of Product Activation, something none of us like too much, for obvious reasons explained below and in the article.
Excerpt: "Mandatory Activation. The license rights granted under the EULA may be limited to the first fourteen (14) days after Recipient first boots the Software Product unless Recipient activates Recipient's copy of the Software Product in the manner described during the setup sequence of the Software Product and, as a result of such activation, Recipient receives a final confirmation number for the Software Product."

That, I think, is the important bit. Activation itself is a paper tiger, but by not activating, you are in breach of your licence agreement. Hence, you do not have a legal installation. Think about the implications of this, and again you'll find good news and bad news.

Windows XP Home Edition vs. Pro Edition: What's the difference?
Posted by Neobond @ 10:52 PM CET
Comments(0)    Forums
People have been asking me to post more info on XP, we are busy with it =o) but for now I want to turn your attention to a well written article over at the Winsupersite. It addresses the initial differences that we can expect from the Home Edition of XP to the Professional version. The latter, as with Windows 2000 Professional when it shipped last year will be targeted at the business sector.

Excerpt: With the inclusion of a new consumer-oriented version of Windows XP, there has been some confusion surrounding the difference between this product, Windows XP Home Edition, and Professional Edition. During a recent visit to Redmond where Windows XP Beta 2 and the new Whistler ("Luna") user interface was unveiled, I was able to discuss this new version with Microsoft executives and product managers. Beyond the obvious--Microsoft is targeting Home Edition at consumers and Professional at business users and power users--Group Vice President Jim Allchin said that the company was working hard to further differentiate the products. "With XP, the home version is what it is," Allchin said. "But where we're going, we've named them appropriately. In the future, this will make more sense. We will do more value add in Pro in the future."

WinXP Tips: How to clear files that are in the staging area?
Posted by Neobond @ 03:33 PM CET
Comments(1)    Forums
Thought you might like this. I will add a tips section into the Windows pages soon, but for now..
Q. How can I clear files that are currently waiting to be written to CD?

A. To clear the waiting files, select the folders/files from the "Files to add to the CD" area and press Delete. However, if you want to clear all the files, right-click the CD-Recordable (CD-R) drive and select "Clear staging area" from the context menu.

You can also manually delete the files, which are stored in the:
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning folder.
You can change this location by modifying the registry value:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ExplorerShell Folders\CD Burning.

One Less Freebie From Cash-Starved Yahoo
Posted by Neobond @ 09:02 AM CET
Comments(0)    Forums
Next month Yahoo's service that gives users access to e-mail and other services via an 800 telephone number won't be free anymore. In yet another move to raise badly needed revenue, the giant Web portal will begin charging a fee for Yahoo by Phone, which provides e-mail, news, stock quotes, weather, sports and voicemail by recorded voice. Yahoo said on its Web site, "As of May 7th, we will be introducing a low monthly subscription fee for use of Yahoo by Phone." Yahoo said it will disclose the Yahoo by Phone fee structure on May 1.
Last fall Yahoo and Net2Phone Inc. launched the service as free but Yahoo hinted that fees might be imposed later.
Yahoo has been hammered by the lingering slump in online advertising, which has provided the portal with 80 percent of its revenue. Last week Yahoo announced plans to fire 12 percent of its staff of 3,510 and reported its first-ever year-to-year drop in revenue. Newsbytes

He has also posted how you can "Removing the Shared Documents folder from My Computer", and not a mention anywhere that "Paul Thurrot brought you this news first", because these were sent in by loyal readers, he does however, show us that his name is worthy of every Window's title bar by replacing "Comments" with "Paul Thurrot" - whatever gets you off I suppose =oP enjoy.

From a Microsoft Technical Account Manager: "Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a, the most recent service pack for Windows NT, was released in November of 1999. Since then, Microsoft has been supporting our customers with a series of hotfixes in response to specific concerns, including security vulnerabilities. "Microsoft intends to continue supporting customers by making hotfixes available as they are needed. However, since the release of Service Pack 6a, the frequency of critical problems reported to Microsoft has declined significantly. Microsoft originally planned on releasing Service Pack 7 late last year, approximately 1 year after the release of SP6a." >> Read More <<

Microsoft Windows eXPerience Lite in the works

Following the tradition of 98lite it seems a team hosted by ETPlanet is already working on releasing a version of WinXP Lite, currently at build 0.1 it shows impressive fetaures built in to XP and a rather dangerous feature that allows you to disable all services!(?) overall it makes TweakUI look like childs play, this is as yet un-released and my sources tell me that this will go out as shareware. More info on this as it becomes available
Microsoft Windows eXPerience Lite Version |Build 0.1|
WinXPLite is the next generation in Windows Tweaking Utilities. It is designed to give people the option to remove programs or Features that you rarely use, speed up processing of the Graphical User Interface, free up ram, removal of integrated programs and more. Using WinXPLite will speed up Windows on slow machines and free up disk space and RAM. Make your version of Windows the best it can be with WinXPLite.

Microsoft Windows XP Pro Beta 2 Administrative Features

Activewin has posted a review of Adminstrative Features that has been included in Beta 2 to make the IT professionals life easier to deploy WinXP in the business envoiroment, well worth the read.

Excerpt: "Let’s talk about a little thing called “Product Activation.” A LOT of people have been complaining about it. This is a feature that Microsoft has put in Windows XP that forces a user to log in to Microsoft and Register their copy of Windows XP. Most administrators have complained about this because they say that they do not want to have to “run around to every computer that gets installed and register it.” Well, don’t worry. You have 14 Days to activate your version of Windows. (30 in the final release) Are you still upset? Don’t worry about it. Microsoft has provided two entries that can be added to an unattended text file, or SIF file in RIS, that will enable you to not have to deal with this at all."

Intel must love Europe....
Posted by ClawHammer @ 02:23 PM CET

... or maybe not. Ebnews is reporting that an eight month old investigation of Intel Corp was spawned from complaints from AMD, and Via. If anything with Intel's business practices are bad, this could spell lots of trouble for the company in Europe.

If the EC determines that Intel engaged in illegal licensing and business practices that include its famous “Intel Inside” PC vendor rebate program, the company would face fines of up to 10% of its worldwide revenue in order to continue doing business in Europe, according to industry sources.

Intel to chop Pentium IV prices
Posted by Neobond @ 10:14 AM CET
Comments(0)    Forums
The chipmaker plans to cut prices on personal computer chips by as much as 60 percent by the end of the month, according to analysts.

Intel will dramatically cut prices on the Pentium 4 this month to stimulate demand for its new chip, as the processor market gets even uglier.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker will slash Pentium 4 prices by as much as 50 percent this month in two cuts coming Sunday and April 29, industry sources said. As reported earlier, the company also will introduce a 1.7GHz Pentium 4.

The cuts will potentially fill a number of strategic goals. The company has already said it wants the Pentium 4 to displace the Pentium III on desktops by the end of the year. Demand is also slow, and rival Advanced Micro Devices continues to gain ground. >> Read More <<
