Microsoft has taken steps to ensure that Windows 95 will become an asterisk in terms of sales. One of Microsoft's most popular products among both consumers and businesses, the operating system is still in use at many corporations today.
The licenses that let most computer makers incorporate the OS in new computers expired Dec. 31. As a result, Dell Computer and other computer makers no longer install the OS on new computers except under special circumstances.

Remember the gag about how many Microsoft programmers it takes to change a light bulb? The answer's none: Redmond simply redefines darkness.
As a variation, try this one - how does Microsoft make Windows open source? It doesn't: it redefines free software - software that gives the user the right to change the source code, as software that doesn't give the user the right to change the source code.

This sounds cool. The next version of Whistler will launch on February 13th and will likely be called Windows XP (eXPerienced).
On Tuesday, February 13, Microsoft will host a Windows "Whistler" event at the Rock 'n' Roll-themed Experience Music Project (EMP). The hour-long event will feature a number of Microsoft executives, including Bill Gates and Jim Allchin, and though Microsoft isn't describing it as such, I think we can expect to find out the final names of both Whistler and Office 10 by this date. Given the name of the location at which the rollout is being held, it's safe to bet that the "XP (eXPerienced)" label mentioned previously in WinInfo will be applied to both Whistler and Office 10. Windows XP and Office XP: Are you experienced? It's unclear whether year tags will be applied to these names, though Bill Gates himself reportedly nixed the "2002" tag for Office.

It is obvious to security is starting to pick up. "Beginning with Whistler build 2419 a product key will be required to complete installation. At your earliest convenience you may wish to get a key assigned to you. The product key issued to you will work for setting up Personal, Professional and Server family products. These keys are unique and assigned per beta ID and should not be shared with other beta sites or people outside the beta program."

We have an idea of the price range but it is too early to publicize it," Bertelsmann chief executive Thomas Middelhoff told journalists on the fringes of the World Economic Forum held in this Swiss resort town.
The California-based Web site has allowed some 44 million users to easily pass along digital music files, most of which have been copied from CDs. Music companies however have sued the site for copyright infringement.
Middelhoff expressed confidence a membership fee would not deter users of Napster's controversial site.
