How do I play shogo online?
Not sure how to play Shogo online? Afraid to ask your friends because they might think you're a weenie for not knowing what to do? Never fear--here's a step-by-step guide that should get you up and gunning in no time.

Getting Started

  1. First things first--install Shogo. For multiplayer, we recommend a full install for best performance.
  2. Second, download and install the most recent patches. You'll need them to play online. At minimum you'll need smpr20.zip and smpr21u.zip. You can get them here. Unzip and install 2.0, then unzip and install 2.1.
  3. Next, get connected. You'll need to be connected to the internet in order to play Shogo online. If you're reading this online, you've got that part covered.
  4. Find a server and start playing. Information on finding servers is listed below. Have fun!

How to Find Servers and Games
There are 2 basic ways of finding servers and playing Shogo online. You can either:

  • Find a Shogo server through an online gaming service such as Gamespy or the Microsoft Zone, or
  • Use the built-in Shogo Multiplayer Wizard to connect directly to a Shogo server.

For the new user, we suggest using an online gaming service. Gamespy and the Zone are free services, and either one can help you get up and running in no time. If you're looking for a server-based game with low ping times and many players, we suggest using Gamespy. If you're looking for a smaller peer-to-peer game, we suggest using the Zone.

If you know the IP address of the server you want to connect to, or if you want to connect to local games, using the Shogo Multiplayer Wizard is good bet.

Gamespy and Shogo
GameSpy is a VERY cool shareware app that allows you to view a list of currently available Shogo servers. GameSpy also provides information about each server, including the # of players playing, the current level, rules, options, player names and stats. Once you find a server that meets your needs (low ping time, # of players, type of game, etc), you can use GameSpy to launch Shogo and connect to that server. To play Shogo using Gamespy:

  1. First, make sure that you have the most recent Shogo patches installed (currently 2.0 and 2.1). Gamespy servers usually run the most recent releases of Shogo, so you'll want the most recent patches installed to guarantee compatibility.
  2. Download and install the most recent version of GameSpy (currently 2.06).
  3. Launch GameSpy (Do NOT launch Shogo yet!). GameSpy will automatically search your computer for GameSpy compatible games (including Shogo), or you will be prompted to select the games you want to use with GameSpy. Choose Shogo during this process.
  4. If you already have GameSpy installed, or if you were not prompted to select games the first time you ran GameSpy, you can add Shogo to the games list. Under the GameSpy... menu option, choose Games and Filters... and then check the Shogo box. Make sure that the folder and .exe are correct.
  5. Under Tools...GameSpy Updates select Update Master Server List. Adding the GameSpy Network master server will allow you to see all Shogo servers that register with Gamespy.
  6. Next, update/refresh the server list. This will ensure that you get the most recent information from all registered Shogo servers. You can do this by right-clicking on the Shogo bar and then selecting Update. You can also use the Update button on the toolbar.
  7. Once you find a Shogo server that you want to join, double-click on that server to join that game. GameSpy will launch Shogo and connect to that server for you.
NOTE: A smaller ping time (servers at the top of the list) will generally provide better multiplayer performance than a larger ping time (servers at the bottom of the list).

Using the Shogo Multiplayer Wizard
The full version of Shogo and the Shogo Demo each contain a built-in Multiplayer Wizard that allows you to find, join or host multiplayer games on a LAN or over the internet. However, the MP Wizard does not display a list of all available Shogo internet games. To view a list of currently available games, check out the section on Using the Shogo Server Webpage.

To use the Shogo Multiplayer Wizard:

  1. Launch Shogo
  2. Click Multiplayer on the Shogo Launcher. This will launch the Shogo Multiplayer Wizard.
  3. Select your networking service. Use Internet TCP/IP for online games.
  4. Check the "Join an existing session" option. When you're finished, click Next.
  5. Enter your player name (this is the name that other players will see in an online game). Then choose your color, connection speed (very important!) and MCA. If your exact connection speed isn't listed, choose a connection speed that is slower than your actual connection speed. Also, we strongly recommend that you check the Frame Rate option box and limit your framerate to 30 fps. When you are finished, click Next.
  6. The server list dialog box will appear. The first time you run Shogo, this box will be completey empty.
  7. Click Add, then enter the IP address of a server that you want to join. If you don't know the IP address of any valid Shogo servers, you can get a list of valid server IP address from the Shogo Servers webpage.
  8. Once you enter a valid IP address into the MP Wizard, all current games will be shown at the top of the dialog box. The ping time to that server will be shown in parentheses next to the server name. Session info will be shown below the game, and player names and scores will be shown on the right.

NOTE: All games for all IP addresses will be shown in the Game Sessions list. You can add or remove additional server IP's by using the Add/Remove/Remove All buttons.

  9. Select the game you want to join by clicking on it, then click Finished. Shogo will launch and connect to the server you selected.
Using the Shogo Servers Web Page
The Shogo Servers web page displays all servers that have registered with the Shogo: MAD website. You can use this page as a reference for server IP addresses. The best way to use this page is to copy a server IP address and then paste it into the Add box in the Shogo Multiplayer Wizard. Monolith servers are also listed on this page. Shogo Multiplayer FAQ Q: How do I set up the Shogo Demo to work with Gamespy?
A: The Shogo Demo will work with Gamespy, but you will need to edit the GameSpy setting so that it launches ShogoDem.exe instead of Shogo.exe. Here's how:
  1. Install the Shogo Demo and Gamespy. We recommend using the most recent version of Gamespy, but version 2.04 or newer should work.
  2. Run GameSpy.
  3. Under the GameSpy menu, select Games and Filters...
  4. Check the Shogo box, then point to the folder that contains the Shogo Demo (usually c:\games\shogodemo), then click OK.
  5. Click on Command Line.
  6. Edit this setting to point to ShogoDem.exe (by default it will be Shogo.exe), then click OK.
  7. Under Tools...GameSpy Updates select Update Master Server List. Adding the GameSpy Network master server will allow you to see all Shogo servers that register with Gamespy.
  8. Next, update the server list. You can do this by right-clicking on the Shogo bar and then selecting Update. You can also use the Update button on the toolbar.
  9. Double click on any Shogo server with (demo) at the end of the name. The Shogo Demo will launch and join the selected game.

NOTE: Only servers that contain (demo) at the end of the server name will work with the Shogo Demo. Servers will be listed by ping time. A smaller ping time (near the top of the list) will generally provide better multiplayer performance than a larger ping time (near the bottom of the list).

Q: I already have GameSpy installed, and I just installed the full version of Shogo. How do I set up GameSpy to work with Shogo?
A: GameSpy 2.04 or newer comes with built in Shogo support. However, you'll need the most recent Shogo patches to play through GameSpy.
  1. Run GameSpy.
  2. Under the GameSpy menu, select Games and Filters...
  3. Check the Shogo box, then point to the folder that contains the Shogo.exe (usually c:\games\shogo), then click OK.
  4. Click on Command Line.
  5. Edit this setting to point to Shogo.exe (by default it will be Shogo.exe), then click OK.
  6. Under Tools...GameSpy Updates select Update Master Server List. Adding the GameSpy Network master server will allow you to see all Shogo servers that register with Gamespy.
  7. Next, update the server list. You can do this by right-clicking on the Shogo bar and then selecting Update. You can also use the Update button on the toolbar.
  8. Double click on any Shogo server. Shogo will launch and join the selected game.
Q: Whenver I try to join a multiplayer game, Shogo just hangs at the Loading screen.
A: If you are running Win95, this is most likely due to an old version of Winsock or DUN (dial-up networking). You can download winsock 2.0 from here.

Q: My ping times are fine when I'm in Gamespy or another app, bu when I play Shogo, I get really high ping times.
A: Some ISDN or 56k modem users may occasionally experience high-pings in during online play. The 2.1 patch improved the performance for many of these users, but we're still working on a final solution.

Q: What's with the servers listed in Gamespy that show 9999 as a ping time?
A: These are most likely invalid servers, or servers that are no longer reporting to gamespy for some reason. To fix this, update your server list by right-clicking on the Shogo bar and then selecting Update, or you can use the Update toolbar button.

Q: I have the full version of Shogo installed, but I want to play the Shogo Demo through Gamespy. What can I do?
A: You need to change the .exe that is launched when you join a game through GameSpy.

  1. Run GameSpy. Under the GameSpy menu, select Games and Filters...
  2. Check the Shogo box, then point to the folder that contains the Shogo Demo (usually c:\games\shogodemo), then click OK.
  3. Click on Command Line.
  4. Edit this to point to ShogoDem.exe (by default it will be Shogo.exe), then click OK.
  5. You should now be able to join Shogo Demo multiplayer games through gamespy. Note that you will need to change this back if you want to play full version games through Gamespy.
