Surface Coal Mining: Coal Miners at Work

A large dragline and dozer are shown in an Alabama mine. Draglines remove overburden, or the soil that lies above the coal seam. The overburden is stockpiled for use in reclamation.
A large shovel is shown loading coal in New Mexico.

Monster trucks are used in modern surface mines, often capable of carrying 250 tons per trip. The size of these machines is shown by the worker standing at the left of this photograph.
