[SI HOME] Smithsonian Internship Opportunities

Each of the Smithsonian's museums and many of it's research institutes and offices offer internships. Two central offices work with all Smithsonian museums, institutes and offices in placing interns (minimum undergraduate level) and providing Institution-wide programmatic support.

The Center for Museum Studies coordinates a centralized internship application referral service to all Smithsonian internships programs. Visit Intern Services to receive an application for a Smithsonian internship or to get more information about internships. The center also sponsors the Museum Intern Partnership Program, a unique program offering a dual internship experience at both a Smithsonian site and at smaller, community-focused museums around the United States.

The Office of Fellowships and Grants coordinates three internship programs for the Institution. Each of these programs offers a stipend.

Minority Internship Program, available to U.S. minority undergraduate and beginning graduate students to participate in supervised ongoing research, or museum-related projects.

Native American Internship Program, offering appointments to Native American students to pursue internship projects related to Native American topics and using Native American resources at the Smithsonian.

James E. Webb Internships, offered to U.S. minority graduate students majoring in areas of business or public administration.

Search an index to various Smithsonian internship programs for more information.
