"The Smithsonian has unique responsibilities among the Nation’s other outstanding educational, scientific, and cultural institutions. Reaching the highest standards of scholarship and finding creative ways to advance knowledge and broaden understanding of the physical and cultural world, we touch every segment of our richly diverse public audience.
Building a dependable base of long-term private support for the principal activities of the Smithsonian is one of the highest priorities of the Institution as it prepares for the next century. Therefore, I invite you to join previous benefactors in the great tradition of American philanthropy by helping to secure the Smithsonian’s stewardship of the Nation’s heritage for generations to come."
                                         --Smithsonian Secretary I. Michael Heyman
