Opportunities for Volunteer Service

Volunteer Information Specialist. Photo by Joe Meyer Volunteer participation at the Smithsonian has been a tradition since its inception. Founded in 1846 for the "increase and diffusion of knowledge," the Smithsonian today is the world's largest museum complex with 16 museums and the National Zoo. It is also an important center for research and is dedicated to national service and scholarship in the arts, sciences, and history.

Like many organizations, the Smithsonian Institution is dependent upon strong volunteer partnerships to carry out its work.

This section provides a general description of opportunities for volunteer service within the Smithsonian's Washington, D.C., facilities.
